Day 47 We arrived in to Shenzhen at 8:30am and when we got off the train we were a bit unsure of how far away and how we were going to get to the border of Hong Kong, luckily when we walked off the platform there was immediately signs for Hong Kong which we were so amused at. We followed the signs- even following one that told us Hong Kong was upstairs and a sign asking us to 'leave the country via the elevator'. We managed to walk the whole way to the border without leaving the station. Getting through border control and in to Hong Kong took a while and we managed to get our first glimpse of Hong Kong at about 11:30am. We were staying in a sky-scrapper called 'Chungking mansions' which basically held hundreds of hostels and guest-houses, Indian restaurants and apartments. The bottom floor is just owned by the Indian population selling food and electrical goods. We had read horror story's about claims of harassment at the entrance of people trying to make you stay in certain hostels, people trying to sell you things and so on, so we braced ourselves walking towards it. We were met with the AMAZING smell of Indian food and absolutely no harassment at all so were feeling happy. The hostel we were staying in was actually really good and our room was just what we were expecting. Starving and not being able to resist the smell we picked up a chicken curry, rice and naan bread which was a welcome change and headed out. All museums in Hong Kong are free on Wednesdays so we headed straight to the Hong Kong History Museum even though the weather was lovely. We ended up staying until closing time as the history was fascinating and the museum was one of the best we have been to. It started at the beginning of time explaining why Hong Kong is so unique and took you right through to the politics of the modern day. We wandered bank to the hostel slowly looking for a place to eat but everywhere was so expensive and hardly any Cantonese food, a complete change to China. On the way back inside the mansions we were handed a 10% off card for an Indian restaurant on the 4th floor so gave in again, paying a little more than we had hoped but not breaking the bank.
Day 48 I woke up feeling like it was Christmas as today was DISNEYLAND DAY! We were both far to excited, the park didn't open till 10am so we grabbed some breakfast and got the metro to the Disney line, we nearly died when a train with Mickey Mouse windows pulled up, inside had luxury seats, Mickey handles and statues of Disney characters everywhere, this was no usual metro. Once in the park we headed straight for the Grizzly Gulch, the park was empty so we didn't queue for a single ride. We got a boat across to Tarzan island and climbed the tree house before making our way to the Lion King show. The show was amazing, like something you would expect from the west end but bigger. We made our way round the rest of the park, Toy Story Land, Fantasy Land, Adventure Land and Tomorrow Land. We watched the parade pass through which was fun and we went to a Disney show called 'The Golden Mickeys' that had lots of songs and performances One of our favourite parts was the 4D show which was amazing, the animations were actually flying at my face, air and water blown in our faces too to make it more realistic. We had a space burger in the Buzz Lightyear Comet Cafe but managed to stop our selves from indulging in the rest of the Disney food on offer. As the evening drew close we made our way to Main Street to see all the Halloween vampires and werewolves, we watched the Halloween 'Glow in the Park' parade which was even better that the day time 'Flight of fantasy' parade we seen, they had UV lights everywhere with haunting music and the performers were excellent We quickly dashed to the Halloween houses to avoid the unavoidable queues, as it was Halloween the park was open till 11pm and the Halloween rides were only open on the evening. Once we had managed to go through the pretty scary haunted houses we made our way to the castle to get our spot for the fireworks. It felt so magical outside the castle and the fireworks were breathtaking, they were done so well and it was the perfect end to the perfect day.
Day 49 We got up early and decided to go to the Peak Tram which is an old Victorian tram that was built to take you from Hong Kong central where the harbour is, up a really steep hill to the higher parts of the island where the upper classes lived. My Dad had told us about it and said it was one of his favourite places when he was in Hong Kong so were looking forward to it. We decided to go all out and buy not only the tram up and down but also the Sky Terrace pass so we could see the best possible view. Now me and Lloyd are two of those annoying people who will read every piece of information we can find so we know as much as possible, so after reading all of the history we finally jumped on the tram and it was amazing. The hill was so steep we were pretty much horizontal in our chairs and were stunned at how they built or even got the tram up there in 1926-amazing. We were a little worried as it was quite overcast but once on the roof terrace we were not disappointed and had great view of the city and could tell why my dad loved it so much as it had a very good view of the port. We stopped for lunch before heading back down. We walked along to St. John's chapel and after a catch up with the map decided to stay at the North of Hong Kong island and have a good look around. We made our way to Possession Road, this is the first place the British flag was placed and it was amazing to see how far away from the sea it was, the land between us is reclaimed land that Hong Kong have made and built! We had a little go on the mid-section escalator (longest stretch of escalators in the world) and we walked through the Western market (stopping off in McDonald's for a hot chocolate as it started to lash it down out of nowhere for about 20mins). We headed for the port to get the Ferry back across to Kowloon and passed an outdoor hut selling Strongbow!!! Well we couldn't let that go by, and with my first sip of cider since leaving the UK, views of the harbour and Lloyd happy with his pint we relaxed and enjoyed. we got the ferry and once back in Tsim Sha Sui we picked up a jacket from the hostel before heading back to the port for the light show. We got there at 7:50pm for the 8pm showing and the place way heaving we couldn't believe it as this show happened every night. It didn't matter really but what was more annoying was the massive crane boat they had put right in the way - numptys! The show was good but mainly lasers so was a but disappointing, the buildings lighting up like Shanghai is what we were expecting but good none the less. We could smell something delicious and noticed shredded squid being sold so snapped some up and ate it next to the fountains. We headed back to the hostel but still feeling hungry we picked up some beef and rice and turned in.
Day 50 Looking for a bit of culture we headed to the new territories for the Ping Shan heritage trail which was a trail of buildings left by the famous Tang clan family. We ended up getting off at the wrong station, wandering round, getting back on MTR and finally finding the trail. We wandered along looking at the pagoda, study halls and residencies, they were beautiful and it was great to find out a bit of history before the colonisation, the tour ended with a gallery in an old police station which was a great end. But we then realised this wasn't the end for us as we had some how come off the track and back on to it so we made our way back to the MTR station the correct way seeing the things we had missed out. Our next place way Stanley on the other side of Hong Kong Island so after a long MTR ride and bus ride we made it there in the afternoon. Stanley is a very rich and westernised part of Hong Kong, quite different to what we had seen in the New territories. After walking through the over priced market we found ourselves on the beach and sat on the rocks for a while admiring the view. Feeling hungry we went in search of food but all along the front was very pricey English style pubs selling fish and chips etc for about £10-£20 each - way out of our budget. As we were about to give up we spotted a tiny little place tucked away and saw noodles for only a few pounds each - result!! After eating our lovely beef and pork chop noodles we treated ourselves to a Horlicks ice cream from McDonald's and a walk down the promenade We headed back on the bus to Hong Kong central and waited for the ferry back to Kowloon. We decided to board the 7:59pm ferry so we could catch the light show and see both sides of the harbour. We thought everybody would have the same idea but they didn't and the ferry wasn't busy so we managed to get the best seat. Seeing the show on the ferry made the show so much better and they skyline was breathtaking, so many sky-scrappers its mind blowing On the other side we stopped for fast food not waiting to pay the high restaurant prices and header back to the hostel.
Day 51 We slept in feeling really tired after lots of early mornings. We had to check out by 12pm so decided to take advantage of the WiFi while we had it and we did some research on Perth before packing our bags to leave. We hadn't had any breakfast and we were determined to find some decently priced local Cantonese food, after walking for an hour and feeling extremely hungry we managed to find the perfect place. We bought steamed pork dumplings, a selection of pepper and eggplant slices with sausage and then some sort of hash brown like fritters which were lovely, we got a coffee and finished it off with custard tarts and still ended up paying next to nothing for it so we were happy! Feeling very full we decided to venture round the rest of Kowloon. We passed through loads of markets and old streets, we were baffled by the bamboo scaffolding the use rather than steel. We picked up some oranges and headed to Kowloon Park. The park had an aviary so we sat and watched the birds for a while. At 5pm-ish we headed back to the hostel, Lloyd had noodles and I had some porridge oats before grabbing our bags and heading to the airport.
