Well what can I say it is a tradition to have pancakes in England on Shrove Tuesday (well in my house anyway), so there was NO way I was missing out on them when I was on the other side of the world.
It worked out perfectly as it was my class assembly on the Monday, so my children presented to the rest of the school about Shrove Tuesday and were really cute as they did so and made me very proud to be their teacher as they sang and presented the information. I was also interesting as I am the only British teacher in the school, that none of the others had heard of Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day (America call it Mardi Gras, but celebrate it in a different way). So that was it, my mind was made up; Indonesia was going to experience a little bit of England. I arrange with the girls we were going to have a 'pancake party', it was so exciting and was really looking forward to it.
I went shopping for the ingredients and the different toppings I could think of. On the Wednesday (I know we were a day late, but school was a little manic at the time, so Wednesday was the best day) everyone arrived for the party, the bule teachers had the beer on the go, while I explain to our Indonesian friends how to make the pancake mix, as they had never had them before. I cooked them up, while everyone experimented with the fillings of sugar, lemon, chocolate spread, ice cream, strawberries and banana. Everyone loved them and wanted more, so more mixture was made and more pancakes were fried up for everyone to eat. It was such a fun evening and I loved introducing a little bit of home to my new friends and Indonesia.
