After a good few days of getting a feel for Cairns and seeing what it has to offer we decided to rent a car out for the weekend and drive 2 hours north to a place called Cape Tribulation. It is one of the hot spots for tourist attractions in Queensland. So a bloke from Leisure Wheels (company that we was hiring the car from) picked us up ourside our Hostel at 11am to take us back to the yard to fill out some forms before heading off. It was $55 a day to hire so we got it for 2 days as we were planning to stay in Cape Trib for the night. So after all the papers were signed, he showed us where to go to get there and it was literally one road all the way there which was good news. Matt started off the driving as we were taking it in turns when we stop as we were visiting a few different places before we got to Cape Trib.
After about 40 minutes we got to our first stop which was the crocodile zoo called Hartleys. It was $33 to get in which was quite steep we thought but had to do it as it sounded interesting. When we got in there we were given a 1'o clock boat ticket to watch the zoo keepers feed the crocs which sounded good. So we had about an hour until then so we had a little browse about and some of the crocs were huge. There was a few Koala's that were nice and you could get quite close to them so we took a few snaps. Then we got our picture taken holding a baby croc which was cool. By this time is was 1'o clock and time for our little boat trip. Jumped aboard with all the others that were on the same boat and off we went around the little river. The zoo keeper was a funny chap showing off a little,he put a dead chicken on the end of a stick hanging by a bit of rope and dangled it in the water above all the crocs heads and they were jumping up trying to get it, very cool to see. The crocs only have a chicken head a day to eat as they don't need that much food, they get most of there energy from the sun. Cool little bit of information i found out and thought i would share it with you guys. After feeding the crocs the zoo keeper put a chicken head on a branch and told everyone to get there cameras ready as this Eagle was going to fly down and pick it up like it was prey. But you had to be quick with the camera and as you can see from the pic i managed to get a great pic of it. The 30 minute boat trip came to an end and we left the zoo and headed to our next stop which was a town called Port Douglas.
When we got into Port Douglas it seemed like a nice little town where people told us to visit for a spot of lunch. We stopped off for about an hour while looking in a couple of shops before being back on the road heading to Cape Trib. As we approached we had to get a Ferry across the river as Cape Trib is a little island. Got over the other side and its just one road all the way up and you can visit loads of little places such a view points, little shops, a ice cream place. But we left all that until the next day as we wanted to find a Hostel for the night. Found a place called PK's which someone said most of the people visiting here will be. So checked in our room which was a little shack with 7 beds in but enough room, had a shower as the were really sticky and all the flies were flying all over us like we was a lump off poop. After our shower we had our dinner at the Hostel which was expensive but quite nice. Chilled for a bit while having a couple of bevvies, and taking in the pieceful atmosphere. There wasnt alot to do at the Hostel so we called it a night at 8.40pm and just had a chat in our room before hitting the pillow. During the night it proper rained and never heard rain like it, so hard and didnt seem like it wanted to stop.
The next morning we got up at about 8.30am to drizzly rain and cloudy skies which wasn't a great start. Got ourselves together and checked out heading back down the island back to the ferry. On the way down we stopped at a place where they make ice-cream which sounded quite nice for brekky. You get 4 scoops of different flavouors which was banana, raspberry and 2 other wierd ones which i can't remember. It wasnt the nicest ice-cream but ok. We found out that the last place we wanted to visit was back down and over the ferry to a zoo where you can hand feed the kangaroo's. Got there, paid $26 to get in and $2 for some food before having a little walk around seeing the crocs, kangaroo's, wallabies and dingo's. Then at the end you walk into like this big garden where there are about 6 wallabies and kagaroos are and a big ostrich looking bird. So we were feeding the kangaroos before this big bird came over, frightning as it leaned over me wanting some food. I walked off but it wouldn't leave Matt alone, probably because it didnt expect someone to be so tall. It just kept following Matt about, at one point in pecked him and Matt jogged off and it chased him down the garden, i've never laughed so much in my life. From then on Matt found a broom and kept shoving him off everytime he came over but still would'nt leave him alone. After that we jumped back in the car and headed back to Cairns. Overall a really good couple of days and good to see somewhere new for a few days...
