So the last day in Buenos Aires come to a finish by an enbarrassing shout-out by me saying "Go Away Dad" in my sleep when all the other room mates were awake. Matt was actually thinking 'Oh My God, Enbarrassing'. But i woke up and knew that i had done it, so carried on and started mumbling for the rest of the night. Thought i'd finish what i started haha! Got up about 8.30am the next morning ready for our 15 hour flight to Sydney, then a connecting 1hr flight to Melbourne. Had brekky and a shower before saying our goodbyes to The Milhouse Team as they were great, friendly people!
Jumped in a taxi that pulled up, chucked our bags in and on the way to the Airport. Straight away the taxi man said that it would cost AR$160 (£23), so we tried arguing that on the way to Milhouse when we arrived it only cost AR$60 (£8). But where he was spanish it was hard to know what he was trying to explain, so the arguing carried on and nearly pulled over for us to get another taxi. Then we realised that the Domestic Airport and the International Airport were in totally different places. And as we came from Iguazu (Argentina) we landed at the Domestic Airport. We were heading to Australia so needed the International Airport. Then everyone was happy, but he was still a t*** as he wouldnt even let me put the window down as it was hot which i ignored and done anyway.
So arrived at the Airport ready to check in and there was quite a line already which wasnt really good for Matt as he wanted a bit of leg room on the long flight for lanky legs. I was ok as you would imagine. The plane was huge, upper deck for the snobs, and lower deck for us travellers. We was dreading the flight a little bit as it can get really uncomfortable and hoping we would sleep on it. There was films, series, documentries, music etc that you could watch but does get a bit boring after a while. Half way through me and Matty had a little walk around the plane to stretch our legs abit. Don't want to be getting Deep Vein Thrombosis.
So after arriving in Melbourne and collecting our bags, grabbed a taxi and straight away felt exactly like being back in England. Left side of the road when driving, nice cars. Everything seemed so modern and clean over here. Arrived at the St Kilda Beach Hostel about 11pm and pretty knackered by this point and just wanted to hit the sack. Checked in which took a while for some reason, got in our rooms and everyone was asleep as all the people in our room worked in Melbourne. I went in knocking into things by accident but didn't really want to put the lights on and wake the other room mates up. We both had to have a top bunk each which i don't really like, put our sheets and duvet's on and jumped straight in. In the middle of the night i thought it was like 10am but was only 3am, i jumped out as there werent no ladder and fell over into the lockers and woke everyone up which was enbarrassing. I think i was sleep walking or something as i got up to get ready to go out. Matt couldnt stop laughing again, I found it funny myself. Straight away the next morning, got up and a couple of the lads said, "Who fell out the bed last night" and smiling in a cringe sort of way they knew it was me and started laughing. Later on Louise (geordie girl) came in from work and the first words to me was " Was you the one that fell out the bed." From then on little jokes would crop up time to time.
For our first day out in Melbourne we decided to get the tram (free tram, well we thought it was free) into the City to look for this place called DFO (Direct Factory Outlet). Its an outlet that sell lots of the designer brand for cheap. We found it quite easily and had a little browse about. I got a couple of t-shirts, and desperatly needed a pair of Vans (plimpsoles) as mine had got ruined in South America. They were quite expensive over here so i thought i'd have a think and maybe buy them another day. We bought a football which we had been looking for ages as there is a park just by us with very good facilities. We got back and in the super market up the road they had reduced chicken, steaks, pork down to really cheap prices so bought some for dinner. That night it was a party night downstairs in our Hostel which we didnt really fancy going to as we were still pretty jetlagged. All the boys in our room and a few from another that all knew eachother were in our room pre drinking. So we just chucked some shorts on and went downstairs to check it out for a hour. As we got to the door the security guard would let us in as we had shorts on which we thought was very strange as it was only a Hostel bar. We werent going to get changed so we went for a walk down the beach.
The next day we just had a look around the town near us (st kilda) and went down the beach during the day to see what that was like. Had a walk down the peer watching some guys fishing while we had a really nice milkshake as we were admiring the views of the city. Later that night me and Matt went a 5km jog around the lake at the top of the road which was amazing. Water fountains everywhere, pull up bars, sit up benches. Just so nice while seeing all the other joggers aswell. We got a bit lost and ended up an hour away from our hostel in the other direction but managed to find the beach and walk back down it to where were staying. Melbourne is an amazing place, BBQ's on the beach that you take your food to and cook it yourself, water fountains. After getting back we had our dinner and went straight to bed as we were tired.
The next day we went next door to a place called CheapAZtravel which organises tours and trips etc. A man called Stu greeted us as we went in, a really nice genuine guy that literally wrote us a timetable out for us for our time in melbourne, then a timetable of what to do, how long and worked out how much it would roughly cost us to do the east coast and all the activities, came to about £1200 if we done it for a month. We booked our flight to Cairns for the 26th October and the Oz Experience (which is a hop on, hop off bus that goes from Cairns to Sydney visiting all the main places down the east coast) plus a couple of trips here in Melbourne to keep us busy until we go to Cairns. As we booked Wilson Prom (which is a national park where you can see wildlife and do a bit of walking) and The Great Ocean Road (which is meant to be amazing with wildlife and amazing views of the ocean, got recommended to us) they chucked in The Old Melbourne Jail where Ned Kelly got hung, The Aquarium, and The Skylight Tower for FREE which worked out good and would keep us busy.
After that we went to Vodafone to see if we could get a Vodafone sim card for our phones as it would cost a fortune to ring home. There was deal going on where you top up $10 (£6.70) a month and call to any landline back in England for maximum charge of $1 (£0.67p) for as long as you want.
Then had a couple of days chilling around the town, making a plan of what we are going to do each day. Then when we was in town we saw that they do a Ramsey Street Tour, (the soap neighbours on channel 5) Matt didnt seem to bothered if he did it or not as he has never watched it, but me on the other hand knew exactly what it was as my mum is a big fan so when its on at home i sometimes watch it. If you do it on the weekend when the actors aint there you get to go into all the different sets and see how it all works which is cool so should be a good day out. All the days seemed booked up with things to do so knew we wasnt going to be bored.
Wilsons Prom - 19/10/2011
Our alarm went off at 6am to get ready for our pick up outside our Hostel at 6.55am. The weather was meant to be really hot today at 28 degress. We were the first pick up so jumped in the van and straight away the women taking us back to where we leave from was jolly and very nice telling us about Melbourne and things to see. After picking some others up went back to the depo where everyone split to what trip you were going on. While we were waiting there was a cafe next door which we nipped in and got a couple slices of toast each. Got on the bus we was meant to be on and started our journey. Our tour guide for the day was a bloke called Peter. Very nice chap but a little strange aswell. Got about an hour down the road and he pulled over to a spot called Fishers Creek where you have a look at the veiws from a platform, not much to see really just amazing views. Hopped back on the bus for an hour a half to a place where we stopped to grab lunch before getting into the National Park as there aint no shops or nothing in there. Grabbed a chicken sandwich each and bottle of drink and headed for another hour to the National Park. We didnt realise how far away it was. We thought it was down the road.
As we got into the Park we stopped after about 10 minutes in to have a half hour walk into the bushes where we we could see some Kangaroos which we were really looking forward to see. You cant really get too close to them otherwise they seem to bounce off but we managed to get some good pics of them. Got back in the van after our walk to our next spot where we would stop for about 3 hours. You could either climb the mountain which took about an hour one way or you could do the pansy walk around a path through the bushes which took about an hour aswell but no hills. So being athletes me and Matt decided to do the pansy one to save our legs and have a little walk through the bushes having a little chat about what the plan was when we got to Cairns. It was very hot and swetty so we headed back and waited back at the van after a couple of hours with a few of the oldies that came back a little early. When Peter got back from the mountain it was about 3.30pm and he got out the tea and biscuits. We didnt have tea but pinched a few bickies. It was now time for our 4 hour trek home as the day had came to an end. After a couple of hours we stopped at a fish and chip shop to grab dinner as it was getting quite late. I got a steak sandwich and Matt got fish and chips. Another hour into the journey Peter made another stop to fill up with fuel and we saw that there was a Mcdonalds so we qucikly popped over and got a Mcflurry. While we on the way home I was speaking to a scottish bloke about things to do in Cairns as he worked for STA Travel and knew everything to do and how to come about of doing it which was a good little bit of information to consider. After arriving back at the Hostel, went straight in, got showered and packed our things up as we were moving Hostels in the morning as the one we are wasnt that great. But by 9.30pm the Wilsons Prom had come to an end and overall an alright day, bit boring but at least we could say we have seen a little bit more of Melbourne.
The next day was a bit of a chillout day but still had things to do in town. We got up about 8.30am so we could get round to our new Hostel for the rest of our stay in Melbourne. Got round there and drop our bags in the storage until 2pm when we could check in. We popped down the town as we wanted to see if we could get an Australian bank account as it would make things alot easier for us as we dont have to keep transferring money from account to account. We could check our balance when we wanted, not get charged for taking money out of the ATM's. We popped into a bank called Commonwealth which a few people had recommended to us and the women was very helpful and set us an account each straight away, plus set our Internet Banking up aswell which was great. We had to wait 4-6 days for it to come. After that we made our way back to the Hostel for a while, had a spot of lunch before checking into our room. We got into our 8 bed dorm which was very hot and very crowded, hardly anywhere to put our bags so bit annoying but as it was only for 6 days we thought we would hang it out. We then grabbed the clippers, a comb and some scissors and hit the park to give eachother a haircut. I had given Matt quite a few by now so i knew roughly what i was doing but it was going to be Matts first time doing me. He done quite a good job until it come to the fringe cut, he had cut it quite high and made me look a little bit like Johnny Bravo, not a good look but i didnt really care. Just have to comb it down. Went back had a chicken roll and went to get our nightly hot chocolate before bed.
The Aquarium - 21/10/2011
We got up at about 9,45am not worrying about time as the Aquarium was only 20 minute tram ride away. Went into the kitchen and had a cup of tea as tea/coffee are free. Got ready and made our way to the Aquarium looking in a couple of shops on the way from where the tram dropped us. I was looking for a certain type of hat that i've been looking for ages. Found them but might go back another day and get one. Picked up our tickets for the Old Melbourne Jail as they never had the tickets in the shop last time we went and booked our Ramsey Street Tour. Then made our way to the Aquarium. Got in and straight away the Penquins were the first thing to see and pretty cool creatures they are. Took a few snaps of them as they would just stand at the window staring and hardly move like they were statues. Moving on to loads of different species of fishes, turtles and others. Made our way to where the sharks were but to be honest there was only a couple to see and they werent really that big, they were in the same tank as millions of other fish and sting rays. Had another little wander about the Aquarium to see if we missed out anything but there wasnt that much to see.
We then made our way outside and onto the cinema where they were showing Paranormal Activity 3. So we bought our tickets but still had a hour to wait before it started so headed to a couple of shops to have a browse about. Had a cheeky mcflurry and went on the Wifi. The film was pretty jumpy, i do like a horror but i am a very jumpy person so did jump and tense quite a few times when the scary parts came. After the film we headed back to the Hostel making a little detour to the supermarket to pick something up for dinner. Had dinner and chilled out at the Hostel ready for our trip in the morning to the Great Ocean Road..
Great Ocean Road - 22/10/2011
The next morning our alarm was set for 6am, but we didnt get alot of sleep as the other people in our dorm would come in late as it was a friday night. So getting up very tired, went and had a cup of tea, got ready and went round the corner to where we was getting picked up from. Jumped on the bus and met our tour guide for the day, AJ. So after getting back to the meeting point where everyone would jump on the bus they were meant to be on, we was on our way. He told us that it would take about 1hr and 20 minutes to get to the start of the Great Ocean Road. And a couple more hours driving down it stoppng every now and then for the views of the sea and wildlife. So he would tell us a couple of stories about how the Great Ocean Road came about and when it was formed etc, quite interesting stuff but boring at times when he kept rabbiting on. We stopped at the start to show us the arch way that starts the road. We done a few more stops until we stopped at the Lighthouse for lunch which was sausages, potato salad and bread, not bad. A Welsh girl called Lauren that had been over here for 18 months and lives by Sydney was on our bus and came and joined us on our table and straight away we got talking and found out that she was probably more manly that me and Matt which aint really that hard! She was about my size but proper lairy and loved a bit of banther but was really funny aswell. After we finished our lunch we could walk round for a hour and go up the Lighthouse for the views which was freezing. There was a little white house that we could go in which apparently had a little girl ghost that you could see sometimes if you sang nursery rhymes, but mostly come out when girls are there and not boys. So we got Lauren to sing Ba Ba black sheep that she obviously knows being from Wales but no ghost came out. She made me jump as i opened a door which they both found hilarious.
After everyone was finished we all got back on the bus until we reached the 12 Aposcles and once again told us a huge story about how it came about. We had a little look around, went down on a couple of beaches then me and Lauren would race to the top of the stairs that took you down to the beach like little kids but all fun and games. As the day was coming to an end AJ stopped halfway home for dinner where there was a Mcdonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks and a Pizza place. Had dinner and as we all went to get back on the bus AJ struggled to find the key to the bus, had a look inside and it was sitting on the drivers seat...oops! There was another bus behind us from the same company which tried getting in but no hope. So being from the cray and having the smallest wrists, they pulled the door open a little and i suck my hand in and pulled the leaver that opened the door which still never worked. By this time everyoe was watching. There was a little red push button inside the door that had to be pushed to open the door and the hanger that we put in wasnt doing it. So them holding the door open again i just about got my hand in to push this red leaver button and the door came open and people clapped, but overall a red arm and a bang on the head from when the door came open but at least we could get home now. And even doing all that he still wouldnt drop us off first, charming!
So when we arrived back our Hostel after buying a 4 litre carton of Goon (cheap white wine) for $10 to get us a little drunk before heading to the town as we hadnt been out yet, had a shower, got ready and started on the Goon. It was like a really cheap, sweet version of cider which was ok at the start but become disgusting after a couple of cups. Went to a place called Chapel Street which was just by us but a very long street and we needed to be at the other end. Everyone said this place is good but after walking up and down it didnt seem that great, a couple of bars with music and a club and thats about it, but it was quite busy. We picked a bar called Lucky Cog which someone told us was good, it wasnt bad. Went in and had 2 drinks before heading back as it was boring and we was quite tired as we got up quite early that day. A long but good day out in the end and looking forward to the Ramsey Street Tour in the morning...
Ramsey Street - 23/10/2011
Our 3 hour tour of Ramsey Street and the sets was at 12pm so had a little lay in before we had to get up. Got ready and jumped on the tram to the city where we had to meet the bus that we was going on. As we had to walk past the shop where i was trying hats on, i nipped in and bought one as you can see from the pics. Got to the meeting point, jumped on the bus and away we went for our 25 minute drive to set. The set is in a different place from where Ramsey Street is. We had a walk round the sets and they showed us Harold Bishops shop, the garage, Charlies Bar etc. He told us a few things that are probably going to happen in the next couple of months, so quite interesting if you are a fan of the show. Then we went round to Ramsey Street which is actually called Pin Oak Road. So whenever they have to do a scene outside the houses they have to come to this road (where people do actually live), do there scene then go back to the studio to film inside the houses as inside the houses are all set up back at the studio, pretty confusing. The people that actually live in Pin Oak Road get paid by the Producers each year to have tourists take pictures of there houses etc. The Producers gives them a weeks notice when they are going to film there so they have to get all there cars off that road, make sure everything is clean etc but we reckon they must pay them quite well. After seeing the street we headed back to the City where the bus dropped us off, and headed back to the Hostel to chillout and have dinner. After dinner we sat up and waited for the footy to come on as they were showing it in the Hostel. So at 11.30 Man Utd vs Man city came on which was a brilliant match as Man City beat Man Utd 6-1 which you will probably never see again so i was well happy. Then after that about 2am Qpr vs Chelsea which was quite a good match as there was a few red cards and alot of moaning and in the end Qpr won 1-0 which Matt loved being a Qpr fan. There was a boy in there that supported Chelsea that was getting on our nerves that we was considering about giving him a slap as he didnt have a scooby what he was talking about. But funny when he stormed out at the end as Chelsea lost. By now it was 4am and time to jump in the sack and go to sleep.
The next day we was meant to get up and visit the Old Melbourne Jail and the Sky-deck but the weather was poxy and we got up a little late as we went to bed so late the night before. So we got all our washing and took it to the laundrette for someone to do our washing for us as mummy takes care of it back home and all the Hostels that we have been to so far do a laundry for us. But when we got to the laundrette the bloke said it would be a lot cheaper to do it yourselves than him doing it, so he showed us what to do and away we we went. It was easy to be honest so next time we need washing done we can do it ourselves. As the laundry was washing we popped down the town and got a top up on our phones, little bit of food for the night time and then headed back to the laundrette to chuck our washing in the dryers. After our washing was all done we headed back to the Hostel, booked our bus to the airport for Wednesday morning which was alot cheaper than booking a cab. Chilled out for the rest of the evening as we were a little tired still and had a earlyish night.
Old Melbourne Jail and Sky-deck - 25/10/2011
We knew we had a busy day ahead of us so we got up about 10am and out the door by 11am. First we got the tram to the Old Melbourne Jail which looked fascinating from the outside. Went in and gave the women our tickets to get through and she told us that at 1.45pm we could go to the building next door and see what it was like to be arrested like back in the day, and the things they would put you through if you had been arrested back in the 19th century. So we went into the Jail and had a browse about and read some stories about all the people that got hung at this prison and what they had done to got there. One women got a peice of rope and tied it round her young babies throat with a rock on the end and chucked him in the river because he was a nuisance. Crazy stories but very interesting to read. After taking a few snaps we headed over to a wing of the jail where we would get arrested like i said earlier. First when we was lining up there was 4 men and 2 women. As soon as the bloke opened the door he seemed serious as he said 'come in and line yourselves up against the wall, dont talk, dont touch anything and stand shoulder to shoulder' bit impossible as i was standing next to Matt. He gave us a card each that said a persons name, what he was in there for and a few other bits of information. He asked me first what my name was, so i answered with the name on the card which was hard to pronounce and then he asked what i was in here for. It said on the card 'Aggravated burglary' but i didnt know how to pronounce aggravated, i kept stuttering which we both found quite funny and even made the serious police officer smurked but after he told me what it said i didnt know why i couldnt say that in the first place, so simple but funny though! He then took us into another room where he would show us how they would search someone for drugs, any sharp objects or any contriband (something that they shouldn't have on them). Soon after that he chucked us in a cell for 5 minutes to show us what it would be like for the convicts over night which wasnt very nice at all, uncomfy. He then showed us the outside area where the inmates would spend most of there time out of there cell for breakfast and lunch and then would have dinner in there cell. Then we could take a mug shot with a number board as you can see from the pics. That was the end of the little tour but we did enjoy reading the stories and seeing what it was like in the olden days.
As i wanted to get these really nice shorts in this shop we got the tram to the docklands but they never had my size again, just had W36 and W26 and i werent fitting into any of them, but there was some hoodies for $9.95 (£6.70) so i got 2 different colours and now i can throw away my primark one. After that we popped to another shopping place where Matt wanted to get this t-shirt that he had bought before but wanted another one. They didnt have hes size and i spotted some shoes that i desperatly need but the size 6 was a tad to small, wierd really as im always a 6.
Then it was time to visit the Sky-deck which wasnt to far away from us now. As we approached it, it looked so nice from the outside. Went in and everything seemed so nice and clean. Took some snaps of the ground floor then jumped in the lift to the 88th floor which took 38 seconds going 9m/s. It was really nice up there aswell and you could go outside but there was wiring stopping you jumping off or doing anything stupid. Plus it was really windy up there and really cold so took a few pics outside before getting back into the warm. We was going to get our picture taken on this glass floor where you could see the ground but it was $12 (£8) just to take the pic and then another $15 (£11) to buy it so we didnt do that as it was really expensive. I just bought a book mark which was $1 haha. We headed back down after about 20 minutes and went back to the Hostel to pack all our last bits up, deflate our football and struggle to get it into one of our bags. Had dinner and shower and chilled for the rest of the night as we had to be up fairly early for our flight to Cairns...
