Nervous Turkey!
The clarification of Matt's swimming adventure the other day was received today. Sat in Chill Out we got chatting to an Ozzy woman, who used to live on the island, who began telling stories of the 'Evil Military Trigger Fish' that lives on the north side of long beach protecting its territory. After a few questions about its sharp teeth, size and behaviour, it became very clear that Matt's run in with the fish was a lucky getaway. The fish that charges at swimmers, knocking them unconscious in the water...... The fish that bites through scuba fins and leg muscles...... The fish that all the locals know to stay away from.
Checkout was at 11am and the boat to the mainland was at 3.30pm so the battle to keep dry (not sweat) and out of the sun went on all day. This was because we will not be showering for two days..... Only wet wipes.
The first boat we had to catch was a small taxi boat driven by a 13 year old boy. It was overloaded with people and baggage and every turn of the vessel threatened a capsize. Chars reoccurring nightmare came true on this journey. She falls backwards with her big bag on her back and can't get up. She just flails her limbs like an upside down cockroach. Who would of thought it would ever happen on a boat with people waiting to get on......too funny.
The next bigger boat to the mainland was a fast, coccyx breaking journey, enjoyable nonetheless. Until the late afternoon dark clouds appeared when we were in the middle of the South China Sea. Luckily the rain held off until we were undercover and waiting for our night bus. The undercover area brought shelter to the locals too. One memorable local was a motorbike taxi driver who was constantly swigging from a liquor bottle encased in newspaper. After eating in the classic 'family living room/restaurant' environment the luxurious night has arrived.
