Today, I headed to Jambiani on the east coast of Zanzibar.
The taxi drive from Stone Town was about an hour. Nothing too eventful on the trip. It was interesting just looking around at people and the country side.
I arrived at the project site (where I volunteer) a bit earlier than they expected. I already had a chance to go to 2 schools and observe some English training. I think it will be a great experience. We have an hour off now after lunch, then went head back for some community work.
The work was painting at one of the schools. After that we went to a place called Rainbow ice cream shop where some kids come for fun, blowing bubbles, etc. I got a bit of a work out throwing a frisbee and picking up and twirling kids in the air, a bit dizzying, but rewarding watching the kids have fun.
The place we stay is essentially a hut-like building compound right by the ocean. Had a chance for a quick swim to cool off. The ocean is like bath water, though. It's quite windy so everything dries quick.
The people in the project are a good group. Mostly British folks. The other people here other than me are staying for quite a few weeks or months. I'm sharing my room with Geoff who is a cop in London, although he's taken 18 months leave where he's travelled and spent time here teaching and other volunteer work too. Besides Geoff and me, there are 4 other female volunteers form their early twenties to one lady who is 50.
I'm sure I'll write more about everyone in future posts.
About time to head for bed. It'll be an early morning everyday here with breakfast at 7:15am.
