My first day involved in teaching. Our first class was with adults who know the language a bit better. I taught with Tegan who is an American who's lived in London for 12 years. Some of the students are very good readers and I was able to teach them some words they didn't know before. Until one of the students asked my age, I had forgotten it was my birthday :-)
The second class was nursery school, teaching 4-5 year olds. It was ok for awhile but after a bit they got very rowdy. We didn't quite finish the lesson, and the local teachers punished the class. We're going to try a bit different tomorrow with some rewards as we go to see if they are better motivated.
Afternoon was a bit more painting and some fun time with the kids.
We do community work for a little time 3 days a week with 'Dulla. He's the local resident , well respected who helps direct the work.
A bit of a surprise since Dulla had to take my passport to get a volunteer visa. The tourist visa I got was not good enough, even though the tour company gave no information that a tourist visa would be needed. The visa costs $200US valid for 2 months, not that I need that long. I'm glad I took more money than I thought I needed, though I still may need to hit the ATM some time.
After supper and some down time we all went for a drink which is a bit unusual during the week, generally not allowed. An exception was made since it was my birthday. It was good company and interesting stories for one drink. I'd almost forgotten my birthday until someone in the morning class asked me how old I was. So the other teacher heard it was my birthday too.
The power does go off here periodically, and that happened when we are the bar. It's open air, and with the sea breezes it actually feels quite cool. The wind here basically never stops but that does help with the hot temps during the day.
I have a bit of a cold, pretty much that started after my ocean swim. I suspect it was in my system and flushed out be the salt water. It's not too bad, just a bit annoying blowing my nose all the time.
That's about it for another full day.
