We survived the first night sleeping in a campervan so that's OK. Awoke to a grey morning in Christchurch. Decided to quickly see the city centre although we were warned that it was still a site of devastation after the earthquakes 3 years ago. It was very sad to see the cathedral half standing and it is now a building site but a temporary shopping centre in shipping containers had some lovely shops.
We headed out of the city and quickly were travelling through farming areas which reminded us of England. Of course being Spring the little lambs were all about. We had a couple of leisurely stops before the English countryside changed to the Scottish mountains and the scenery became more dramatic as we headed to the snow capped Alps. The grey skies became clear blue and the view of the beautiful turquoise Lake Tekapo in brilliant sunshine was amazing.
We managed to get a lake view spot in the camping sight and walked to the town and to the famous church by the lakeside, but unfortunately a coach full of Oriental people had arrived at the same time! Lupins and poppies are all growing wild by the lakeside and they smell beautiful. It is really strange seeing English flowers at the wrong time of year growing in unexpected locations. Next to the campsite were some hot water spa pools so we treated ourselves to a relaxing spa baths, it made a nice change from the workout in the swimming pool which we usually do. Graham is going to sit outside in a bit, as it is suppose to be a great location for stargazing . I am going to put the fire on and get my book out.
