The thunderstorm went through in the night but did not disturb us too much and once again Graham was off to transition early to rack his bike. I decided to go a bit later as I had my bike. It was a bit of a shock when I went outside, the temperature had dropped drastically. I debated whether to go back and get coats but I was so loaded up that I decided I would soon get warm. The lakeside was still suffering from the storm with flooding and waves breaking over the wall. Luckily the triathlon course is in a sheltered harbour.
I met up with Graham after he had racked his bike ready for his last event. Although pleased it was cooler, he was actually getting cold, so I set off back to the hotel on my bike for warm gear. The sun started to appear and it was warming up by by 11.00 when it was time to get into wetsuits and face the 1500m swim. The swim start looked manic and there was lots going on as buoys were still being moved as swimmers were nearly coming head to head as different waves went off. I walked up to see the swim exit and there appeared to be some strong currents near the the exit slip pushing the swimmers backwards. This made interesting spectating, but I really felt for the poor swimmers who seemed to get stuck in this current and were struggling to get to the exit ramp when they were totally exhausted. Graham got to the exit ramp OK although he later confessed he found it difficult at the end. I couldn't follow him to transition so wondered back along the lake front watching the various swimmers. When I got to the start I saw Louise Minchim and wished her luck and warned her and her team about the currents, she was going to be the last wave off but everything had come to a standstill. Apparently there was a problem with the pontoon, it was getting too rough . The 1500m swim for the last waves was changed to a 750m swim and a different start. By the time this was all changed and buoys moved the starting times were way behind schedule. I then headed off to watch Graham on the run. The bike leg was not very good for spectators so I hadn't managed to see him, but I cheered him on the run and although the sun was out, it wasn't as hot as Thursday and he finished in a good time, although was only 9th GB . Maybe 3 events is too many!
After collecting our bikes we cheered on Louise Minchin who was looking a bit lonely out on the run course, as she was in the last wave the course was emptying fast.
Back at the team hotel the bikes were packed away in their bags ready to be sent home. We then went back to the course to watch the Men's elite race, sadly Jonnie Brownlee was not in top form . We stayed around for the closing ceremony and award ceremonies for the age groupers with a free beer and chicken kebab to celebrate, before walking back home along the Magnificent Mile.
