This trip has been planned for a long time. It seemed like a good idea to have a weekend in New York before going to Chicago for the World Triathlon Championships but slightly complicated with the issue of taking the bikes and it got even more complicated when I qualified so two bikes to transport. Anyway at great expenses the bikes were sent separately and should be winging their way to Chicago in good company (Louise Mincham's bike was in the van with them!)
No door to door pick up for us however, we decided to use public transport to get to Heathrow, and although it was painfully slow to get through Oxford we arrived at Heathrow in adequate time. There were no celebrities on the bus, just some dodgy, smelly migrants with no luggage, looking very out of place.
It's always good to do a bit of people watching at Heathrow. Today we saw a large black woman with the most amazing Afro hairstyle. I just just thought what a perfect travel pillow she was wearing, all she needed was a large hairnet! Another woman getting on our flight was coughing and spluttering so a quick squirt of first defence was needed. We always seem to be the only people that bother with flight socks. I think it must be an image thing as they have to be put on before you fly as its near impossible to do anything once wedged into your flight seat, I definitely can't do the necessary contortions to get flight socks on.
Flight was fine, a time to watch a couple of films, have a doze and some food. We eventually managed to get through US security which is always really scary and on to the train network which was very good. A slight hiccup was that we got the express train which didn't stop at the station in Brooklyn which we needed, so a bit of a detour required . The New Yorkers however were very helpful and kept pointing us in the right direction.
We got to our Airbnb which was a lovely small basement studio, in what is in a trendy area called the Slopes in Brooklyn. Our lovely host had left us bagels, fruit and a bottle of wine. We wandered up the local High street with its trendy bars, shops and restaurants, before a quick bite to eat and sleeeep.
