The next morning we prepared to leave and luckily for us the weather looked like it was about to turn horrible again so best to get out before we became trapped again.
The bus left on time in the morning and our first stop was Bushman Petes Cafe. Not my favourite place to stop as he also known as Possum Pete as he kills possums. The evidence was spread around the cafe with fur on all the seats and dead possums and other animals mounted on the walls. There was also a camera crew there filming for a news programme as NZ have recently changed the law preventing them from selling their "famous" possum pie! We were asked to get involved but politely declined!
Anyway we got out of there after having a pancake, tea and scone and carried on to Hokitika a small town. Apparently tho there is has been a book written recently by a girl who used to visit when she was a child and it's based there which is causing fans to flock to it!
We decided to see what the fuss was about and buy the book (the luminaries) and also it's been stamped to say we bought it there so nice little (well big) souvenir!
Also had the best white hot chocolate in the town as it actually had white chocolate in it! Nice surprise at the bottom of the mug! Probably not important but you have to appreciate the small things when back packing!
Our next stop was the Punakaiki pancake rocks. We did the small walk before getting back on the bus. Basically it was a lot of rocks which have confused scientists because they can't work out how they have been formed and are only in this one location!
At the bus stop in Nelson we began the walk to the hostel to be stopped by a guy claiming to be the shuttle to the hostel but with no logo or sign! A bit dubious at first he eventually said something about our booking which made sense so we cautiously got in. Luckily as well as the hostel is on a really big windy hill which would not have been fun!
