We were woken up a few times during the night by our 3 male roommates, returning from the big night out at different times. The funniest was when one of them came in at 5am, switched the light on (apologising to us as he went), went in the shower, then when I woke up an hour later, found him fast asleep sprawled on the floor! When I next woke up he'd made it into his bed though, so I didn't have to step over him to get into the bathroom.
When we did eventually wake up quite early due to the time difference (Queensland opts not to have Daylight Saving Time!), we got dressed and left the 3 sleeping beauties in the room. After using the computer for a while, we caught the 10am courtesy bus to the town centre, and headed to the beach. We walked through the centre, which is different to most other beach resorts we've been to so far - it's really built-up with a lot of high-rise buildings, but it's quite compact so you can walk around quite easily. The beach was lovely, the nicest we've been to in Oz so far. The water was warm and lovely to swim in as there is a natural sand bank a few metres out which you can shelter behind to avoid the massive waves further out. We spent a few hours sunbathing and cooling off in the water. Dave ventured into the town and got us a Subway for lunch, then in the afternoon we looked around a few shops before doing some food shopping and getting the courtesy bus back to the hostel.
We were meeting up with Liam and Rachael that night, who we first met in San Francisco, then bumped into again in Fiji (they were on our disastrous quiz team when we 'juggled' in the talent round…) so we decided to go back into town early and get something to eat before meeting them. We ate at a seafood place on the main street which had special offers on, then had a wander around watching the street performers and having a look around the craft market. We met Liam and Rachael in a bar called 'The Avenue' and spent the rest of the night catching up with them. After Fiji, they spent a month in NZ in a campervan and then came to Oz to work for a few months in a hotel in the outback - sounds very hot! They were getting a Greyhound at 8am the next morning so they left around midnight, and we stayed on to watch the band that were playing.
A bit later, we called it a night, and went in search for food. I got a chicken kebab which was like a toasted wrap (a lot different to home!), while Dave was over the moon with his pie with mash, mushy peas and gravy piled on top! We walked back to the hostel using our little map, and ended up going a longer way than necessary - never mind!
