This morning we had a lie-in until 9:45, and we didn't end up leaving the campground til 11am as we got chatting to John again - more tips for us!
Eventually we headed out and drove to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. This was where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 between the British and the Maoris, which gave the Brtitish control of New Zealand in exchange for promising the maoris possession of their lands. A historic place, referred to as the birthplace of NZ. We paid $25 to look around the Treaty House, where the men met to agree the wording of the treaty, and ateh grounds, including a Maori meeting house built in 1940 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the treaty. We also saw a giant Maori war canoe used in the anniversary celebrations. It was a very interesting place and well worth a visit.
After eating lunch overlooking the sea, we drove into Pahia, near to our campsite. We wandered around for a while but the town was very quiet and there wasn't much there apart from companies selling tours around the Bay of Islands, which we couldn't afford!
Our last stop of the day was Harura Falls, where we took a few photos. After that, we headed back to the campsite and spent the night in front of the TV again with more wine (clearskin wine, which is good quality wine that the wineries can't sell, so they sell is cheaply in supermarkets without a label - a good tip from John!) and chocolate! We could get used to this...
