This morning, Laura's neck and glands were still sore, so we decided to try to find a doctor to take a look. We drove back along the gravel road towards Balclutha - a 50km drive.
At the I-Site, we asked about doctors and they were very helpful, asking if we wanted them to book Laura an appointment. They rang around a few doctors before they managed to get her in at 3pm. With a few hours to kill, we went to the library to get online for half an hour. Then we drove to the nearby park, where we planned to have our lunch.
After closing all of the doors of the van, I realised with horror that I'd locked the keys inside - I could see them stuck in the ignition. Luckily, one of the side doors was unlocked, so we started to try and find a way of getting to the button that would unlock the driver door. We tried poking a knife through the cargo barrier, but it wasn't long enough. We also tried a barbecue fork - again, too short! I looked in the box where we keep the heater and power cable and happened to find a clothes hanger - we were onto something! I cut the metal hook off my washbag with Laura's nail scissors, then taped it onto the end of the clothes hanger, with some surgical tape from our first aid kit! We moved around to the passenger side so that we weren't stood in the road, and tried our new device through the barrier. As I was trying to get the hook around the button, a woman walked past us, turned back and gave me a look that could kill - she probably thought I was trying to break in! Just when I was starting to think about actually breaking in through the window, I pulled the hook and the button popped up - success! I was actually quite pleased with myself, despite being daft enough to lock the keys in in the first place!
We walked into the park to eat, and tried to walk along the river at the back of the park, but the wind was so strong it was hard to walk! So we gave up and drove to The Wharehouse, opposite the doctors. We picked up a few supplies, then I sat and waited while Laura went in the house over the road where the doctor practiced from. Alomst an hour later, she was out - $50 lighter for the appointment! Apparently he thought there was an infection in her throat, but wanted her to have a blood test at the hospital down the road, so we headed there - another $35 for that, then $15 for the prescription of antibiotics. Altogether, we spent $100 (£50) on one trip to the GP - made us appreciate the NHS!
So we weren't in the best of moods as we drove back to the campsite - it was raining, we'd wasted a day, spent lots of money on something that's free at home, and we're still recovering from the keys incident!
Back at the campsite, we cheered up a bit and spent the night in the van cooking and reading, as the wind and rain hammered down on us. Hope we have a better day tomorrow!
