Today we woke up to more rain, but the resort didn't seem to lose any of its charm, even in the bad weather. After breakfast, we had booked to go on a visit to a school at Yalobi Village, so we headed down to the dive shop at 9:30am. There was a bit of a delay setting off beacuse the boat they were going to use wasn't working, so we had to wait for another boat to come from the village to take us.
Eventually, we set off on the choppy Ocean towards the village which took about 20 minutes. A few people felt a bit seasick on the trip! When we arrived we were led by Viri, our guide, through the village. We walked past the local rugby team who were training for a tournament coming up on the mainland. When we arrived at the school, we walked in one at a time and were greeted with 'Bula!' from some very excitied childrem! The teacher explained that the kids were aged 6 and 7 and that they would sing a few songs for us. They then sang lots of English nursery rhymes including Hey Diddle Diddle ("and da deeesh ran away wid da spooooon!") and Hickory Dickory Dock ("Hick-ary Dick-ary Dock!"). They were really funny to watch - very happy and enthusiastic to the point of shouting their way through the songs!
When they'd finished , Nicki thanked them on behalf of the group and presented them with some coloured pencils and oil pastels that her and Duncan had brought with them. They were very excited and grateful and they all crowded around the teacher to see what as in the bag. Despite the classroom being quite basic (no tables or chairs!) it seemed like they had good teachers and were quite well-resourced - lots of paper, a few books, writing and drawing materials, etc. Maybe they are quite well funded by the resort, as they have a scholarship fund here which goes to the school.
After leaving the school we paid a quick visit to a local craft market, which was several local Fijian ladies sitting on the grass nearby, selling locally produced jewellery, photo frames and sulus (sarongs). We then headed back to Octopus for lunch, and the sea sickness returned for some, but we were ok!
In the afternoon, we sat around writing for a while, then went for a sleep about 4pm. We had happy hour cocktails (a couple of Long Island Ice Teas!) and then enjoyed another feast - curry night this time, sitting with a group of Germans who chatted to us about football for a while. Had another drink and then I sat and played cards with Duncan and Nicki while Laura went to bed. I lost every hand, so was glad to call it a night at about 11pm!
