After a good nights sleep, we got up to enjoy the buffet breakfast - cereal, toast, cakes, fruit, omlettes - bit of a change from the breakfast at Backpackers Paradise! We headed down to the beach to hire snorkels and fins for the rest of our stay.
Dave's first snorkelling experience was fantastic, after getting used to breathing properly! The reef is really close to the shore and packed with all kinds of beautiful fish - our favourites were the 'Geordie' fish with black and white stripes!! After relaxing on teh beach for a while and saying goodbye to Liam and Rachel (who were off to another ilsand), we headed back for another excellent lunch.
In the afternoon we spent time at the pool and went to a storytelling session with two Fijian women from the village. They told us about a Fijian God from the next island who came to steal water from Waya Island. The God from this island spotted him and threw a stick which burst the package (made from a leaf) holding the water! They also told us about a ten-headed monster who lives in the hills here and has a diamond in his 'middle' head! With 10 heads that doesn't really work but never mind... And the true story of an American man who came to the island about 7 years ago and stayed at the backpackers place oon the other side of the island. He didn't really speak to anyone but was seen swimming and snorkelling late at night. One day he claimed to have seen a girl waving at him from further up the mountain (too much kava?) and took the dog from the backpackers for a walk to find her. he was never seen again, despite a big search with police, army and helicopters. Eventually his tshirt and 2 teeth were found, lots of the Fijian people think he's still out there somewhere!
In the evening the villagers came to the resort to perform a Meke of Fijian songs and dances before we sat down to a Fijian buffet feast! Another brilliant day and another early night - Laura was asleep by 9pm!
