Today we had a dive in the Ocean booked for 11am so after breakfast we relaxed in the hammocks before heading to teh dive shop to get our gear (including wetsuits!).
We were in the boat with 3 other qualified divers who were diving with a different instructor. Kuki and Simon, the boatman, helped us get our equipment on when we got to the dive site then showed us how to get in the water - sit on the edge of the boat, one hand covering mouthpiece and front of mask and the other holding the back of the mask, then on the count of 3 roll backwards into the water! I got a bit panicky at first as I couldn't get my breathing right but I was fine after a few minutes.
We slowly started decending in the water, holding onto the rope which was attached to the anchor. Dave had a bit of trouble equalising his ears and had to go back up a few feet to sort it out. We started swimming past the coral and all the amazing fish, whilst holding onto Kuki. He pointed out interesting fish and showed us how some coral changed colour when he touched it. All was going well until he let us go to swim on our own. We were swimming along merrily, then I heard a bell ringing and didn't know what it was. I looked around for Kuki, but couldn't see him, then looked below and he was aboutg 5 metres below us looking up! It was then that I realised we were at the surface and we'd somehow managed to get ourselves up there when we were meant to be going straight along past the coral! Kuki came up to the surface and asked us what had happened but we didn't know! We also didn't know what the bell signalled (he hadn't told us!), so when he rang it we didn't know what it was or what it meant. Oh well, we still had a great time!
Back at the resort it was raining so we ate lunch then played cards with Duncan, Nicki and Kevin before Kevin left. After showering we sat in the dorm for a while talking to another English couple - Hannah and Johnny. They were doing the same trip as us but in reverse so we had lots to talk about. After dinner the activity was volleyball - Fiji vs The Rest of The World! We were spectators but Duncan and Hannah joined in. Fiji won but it was close(!). We were all tired so all 6 of us went to bed at 10pm!
