On 26th January 1788, captain Arthur Phillip came over on one of the 600 ships from England and formally declared possession of the colony, New South Wales and was placed as the first governor general!!! It's a major cultural day filled with a variety of feelings and associations! Due to the historic basis of the day, it is sometimes considered with resentment by indigenous people who rightly refer to it as 'invasion day'!!! Happy 'Australia day' people!!!

The australians celebrate it the same way as we celebrate st Patrick's day, yes I'm still not quite sure why we don't celebrate at georges day? With fake tattoos, fog horns, capes, hats, bbqs and copious amounts of alcohol!

Here in the hostel, they celebrate it by throwing each other in the pool and falling off benches!!!
