Kya Travels
Guess who woke us up today? Yep, the Koreans again. The saving grace though was that they were checking out, so it was the last time we had to be woken up by them! When they left, we slept in for a while before getting ready, and messaging our plans to Matt. When we were ready we walked down the street to the pizza place we had tried to go to the other night, when it was closed, Pinsere Pizza. They looked amazing, and we ordered one each (after having a very hard time choosing) and they were absolutely the best pizzas in the entire world. As Darren very nicely put it, that's pizza worth getting fat for! When we finished we were really full, but it was so good that we bought another one to take home with us! We walked back down to Yellow, where we met Matt again, and we walked together down to the Colosseum. When we were just around the corner, we got asked directions to the Colosseum by a Spanish family, so we got some good karma points and led them around to the massive structure. When we got down there we got in line for tickets, which wasn't so bad, seeing as the line actually went under the Colosseum, so it looked very cool! We got to the front and got our tickets, then went through to the inside where we spent some time just wandering around and marveling at the immensity of the ancient structure. After wandering around there we went up some very steep stairs to the next level, where we had a much better view over the stadium. The floor had disappeared over time, so we could see straight down into what was probably the dungeons where they held people until the tournaments. It was very cool! It was kind of hard to imagine how it would have looked in its time, because of the degree of ruin it was in, but it was still extremely impressive! We also had some great views of the surrounding area from the windows at the sides. We were trying to find out how to get to the very top deck, then discovered you could only go up there with a tour group! Damn! After wandering for a while longer we headed back down and went back out. We started to walk to the palatine gardens and roman forum, which we could enter with our Colosseum ticket, then it started raining. We put the umbrella up and stopped at a souvenir stall where we found a very cool sticker for the guitar, then went up to the entrance, went inside and sat on a bench under a tree waiting for the rain to subside. When it started getting lighter we went back out and wandered around the gardens. It was a huge area that was absolutely full of roman ruins. There were pieces of massive columns, foundations of buildings, random walls that were still standing here and there, and all sorts of ruins! They were extremely ruined though, so without a guide to tell us, we had no idea what we were looking at. We wandered through that area to the other side, then left the garden from the back entrance and made our way back to the hostel. We said goodbye to Matt when we were between the two hostels, then we went upstairs and chilled out on the wifi for a while. We were stuffed! It had been a big couple of days! After a while we headed back out and walked down past the station to a department store we had passed the other day, and went in to look for shoes. The guy that was working there had no English, but with pointing and signing we got to understand each other, and he pointed us in the right direction and helped to find the right size. We found some nice shoes that were only €30, and they were quite sturdy and comfortable, so we ended up getting matching shoes again! We traded my grey shoes and Darren's blue ones for another pair of grey and blue shoes! So funny. So we bought the shoes then headed back towards our hostel, stopping at the restaurant we'd gone to on our first night in Rome, Andrea, for dinner. We both got a delicious pasta, mine was a mushroom one and really really yummy! When we finished there we went over to Yellow as we'd planned on having a drink with Matt before bed, but he wasn't there so we just went back to the hostel and went to sleep. But pretty much as soon as we'd gotten to sleep, the door opened and the light was turned on as one of the guys from reception showed in our three new room mates, who were checking in quite late! They were from the US and were up for a bit of a chat and some recommendations, so we talked for a while, then they decided to head out and find some food. As they were leaving, Darren and the guy, Jimmy, exchanged facebook details, and we discovered they had a mutual friend! What the?! It was Mark, who was from the US, who we had met and had an amazing time with on our tour in Scotland back in June! Crazy! It was such a spin out! So after chatting a bit more after discovering that, they finally went out for dinner and we went back to sleep.
