Kya Travels
Today we got woken up really early again by the Koreans getting ready for an hour or more. AGAIN! So annoying. Then after a bit more sleep we got up, got ready and headed downstairs to discover that it was hailing! So we went back upstairs to grab something we'd forgotten, then by the time we got back down it had cleared up. I don't mind the rain and hail here so much, as it only ever lasts a very short amount of time! So we walked down and got our breakfast to takeaway again, then started to make our way to the Vatican City. We decided to go a new way, so we could see different scenery on the way there, but after finding a cool corner with some nice fountains and some cool squares full of ruins, we found ourselves at the colosseum again! I had turned us around somehow, damn crazy winding Roman streets! So we walked the rest of the way going the same way as we had been before, past the Colosseum and the cat sanctuary, then kept walking. We stopped for a look at some pizzas in a place on the way, just because they looked really nice, and they had tasters. They were so delicious that we just had to buy a slice, even though we were on our way to lunch. There was a fantastic potato pizza with blue cheese, and a spicy eggplant pizza, which were both amazing. Then we kept walking. When we were a block away from the bridge to the other side of the river, and after walking for about an hour or so, we walked up a little backstreet to find a pasta place that tripadvisor had recommended, called Pasta Imperiale. We had to leave again to get some cash out, then ordered some pasta. I got a gnocchi with Gorgonzola and Darren got a tortellini with a cream and bacon sauce. The food was amazing, the gnocchi was so delicious, it just melted in my mouth. Yummmmmm! After lunch we walked over the bridge past a massive church or something, and walked down the promenade to St. Peter's Basilica. We saw a girl who looked almost identical to Darren's sister, Tanya, which was very strange, then we had a wander around looking at it from the outside only, as it was closed for a special mass. We left that area and started to walk down to the Vatican Museum. Then it started raining again! We used our new umbrella and kept walking, then saw the Tanya girl again, who was selling guided tours of the museum, so we stopped for a chat with her, and Darren got some photos with her after it stopped raining. We walked with her to the office, but after a while decided we might just do it ourselves, as it was a little too expensive for our budget. So we headed over to the museum and didn't have to line up at all, which was a nice surprise. We bought our tickets, which were cheaper than we'd been told, which was another nice surprise, then went up a winding ramp past a 'boats of the world' exhibition to the start of the museum. We wandered around the first section which was full of ancient artifacts, including a surprising amount of ancient Egyptian statues, sculptures and relics, before it moved on to become more ancient Roman style gods and things. There were so many statues and sculptures of absolutely everything, and we walked past a room full of animal statues which looked cool. Then it started to change a bit as the artifacts turned more Christian style, and then we were walking through rooms with roof to floor sized massive tapestries, then the rooms were made entirely of paintings, on every inch of it except the floor, roof and all. It was all pretty spectacular, but the place was absolutely massive and there was so much information to take in that after an hour or so we were pretty exhausted and a bit over it too! So we stopped at the cafe there for a hot chocolate each and to rest our legs for a bit before heading up to see the Sistine Chapel. As we walked in, a priest was just finishing a sermon, so we got to witness a sermon happening inside the Sistine Chapel, which was pretty cool! When he'd finished talking, we turned our heads up and checked out the famous roof painted by Michelangelo, but by this time we'd seen so many painted roofs through the building that it was all getting a bit same-same. It was still amazing though! After checking that out, we headed out through a modern art exhibition section and through heaps more relics and exhibitions, then decided we were done with it for now, so we headed to the exit rather than continuing on for the next half of the museum! By the time we got out, it was already getting dark, so we wandered back down the street, out of the Vatican City and over the bridge where we made our way to a bus stop. Our feet were too sore to make the over-an-hour trip back home! We need new shoes! So we caught the next bus back to Termini station and chatted to a group of Koreans on the bus, before getting off and heading back to the hostel. When we got there we put our feet up and chilled out on the wifi for a bit. Darren had a message from Matt from Canada who we'd met in Albania, saying he was in town, so we organised to meet him for dinner, then made our way down to a pizza shop that tripadvisor had also recommended. We met him there, and had a pizza, beer and a catch up with him which was really nice. The pizza wasn't the greatest, but still pretty nice. When we finished, we paid then went to leave, noticed it was raining pretty heavily, so went back inside for another beer! When it calmed down a bit (although it was still raining) we headed out and made our way over to Matt's hostel, Yellow, where they had a bar. We shared a jug of beer there and chatted a while longer, then we said goodbye to him and headed back to the hostel, where we were, once again, kept awake for a stupid amount of time by our Korean room mates, before we could finally get some sleep.
