Kya Travels
When we woke up this morning, we packed our bags and I headed downstairs while Darren got ready. I had a Skype date with the family, but no one was online, so I just used the wifi for a while. The bellman came over to tell me that our taxi was ready (20 minutes early) so I went upstairs to get Darren, finished the last of my packing then went downstairs. The bellman carried our bags out for us, and as we walked out to the car, he told us to make sure we pay 130 pounds and nothing more, because the driver would probably try to get more from us. So we got in the car, and started the trip to the airport. The traffic was ridiculously heavy for the first part of the trip, but eventually we got onto a clear road and had a pretty cruisy drive (for Egypt, anyway) to the airport. On the way the driver pointed out a few things to us, showing us some sights, then as we were arriving into the airport, he asked us to pay him. We weren't going to fall for anything this close to the end of our time here, so told him we would pay when we got there. When we arrived he tried to charge us more, but we weren't falling for his tricks. We tipped him the small amount we could afford, then grabbed our bags and headed into the airport. We went to go through security to the check in desks, but needed a ticket to get in, so we had to go to a sales desk and get them to print it for us, them went through security and checked in. The guy at the desk was friendly and tried to get us to play him a song on the guitar which was funny. We went through immigration then went to grab some food. After a small snack we tried and failed to find a sticker for the guitar, then went to wait at the gate. We had a small amount of money left so Darren went and got some chips to snack on while we waited, which got rid of all our Egyptian pounds exactly. Score! When the gate opened, we went in through another passport check, boarding card check and security check, then boarded a stinking hot plane. When the engines started it cooled down quickly, but it was pretty crazy for a bit there. We set off and I had a quick snooze. We got a tray of airplane food, which was pretty nice too, then I spent the time trying to catch up on the blog before we landed in Rome. When we landed, we made our way to the metro and got on a train to Termini station. We had a chat to a nice couple from South Africa while we travelled, then when we arrived, we got our bearings and walked down to the hostel. The check in was in a self service laundry place, and there was a really friendly girl from Egypt who welcomed us, and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine! When she finished talking to us, the man there gave us a map of the city and went through the sights outlining what we could do on each day. But he talked so fast! He circled everything for each different day in different colored highlighters, so I wasn't too worried, as it would be very easy to interpret later. When he was done, the girl took us to our room, which was in a different building across the road. We said hi to a couple of guys who were in there then dropped our bags off and headed out to find some real Italian food for dinner! We went to a restaurant that the hostel recommended called Andrea, where I got a gnocchi in tomato basil sauce and Darren got a spaghetti matriciana, when he asked for an authentic Italian meal. We got some bread and chili oil as well, and everything was absolutely amazing. I now know what gnocchi is supposed to taste like. So delicious! The flavours were very simple, and there were not many ingredients in the dishes, but somehow that made it even better. It was so good! When we were done, we went to pay, then found out they didn't take card, and we were out of cash! Oops! The girl there was very nice about it though, and let us go together to find an ATM at the train station, and didn't seem bothered about it at all. So nice. So we went over and got some cash then went back to pay before heading back to the hostel. The guys, Jordy and Mario, were still there, drinking vodka together, and they invited us in to drink with them, so I drank the wine we'd been given and the boys shared their vodka with Darren. They also had a bottle of liqueur called China Martini which was absolutely horrible, and they gave it to us! We started playing Names with them, while laughing and chatting together, and the penalty for losing a round was a shot of the horrible liqueur! That was a good way to get rid of it! We played a few rounds, drank a lot of alcohol and the boys went out for some pizza that they brought back to share (although it was meat, so only Darren shared with them!) After a while the girl from Turkey, who was in the other bed in our room came back, so we invited her to drink with us too, and she brought over her bottle of wine to share! Darren left the game at that point, after drinking about 50/50 vodka and fantas, so the four of us played a new game, Pyramid, which was a dangerous one! It pretty much consisted of me having to drink ridiculous amounts of wine ridiculously quickly! I don't remember much more after that game!!
