Kya Travels
This morning I woke up a little worse for wear when the cleaner came in to do up the room. Darren and I spent some time looking at the map of Rome and plotting out our day, then I had a little Skype session with mum and dad before we got ready and walked down to the cafe for breakfast. With the hostel we got vouchers for a drink and a croissant each in the mornings, so I ordered a coffee and Darren got a tea and we sat under the umbrellas outside. Then it started raining. Some if it was dripping on our table, so we moved over to the next one. Then it started raining really heavily, and I was getting splashed a bit. Then it started hailing really heavily. So we covered our cups and ran the short distance back inside the shop! We got a table out the back there to wait out the weather. Welcome to winter I suppose! While we were inside an old guy slipped on the wet tiles and fell on his back down the stairs. Poor man! After sitting in there a while and finishing our breakfast, the weather cleared up all of a sudden, so we took the chance to get out while it was dry and walked back to the hostel reception. We got some suggestions for where we can go to buy cheap clothes, although it was a market that was suggested, which was already closed, so we decided to do that the next morning instead. So we walked down towards the train station looking for a umbrella, so we didn't get caught out again, and found heaps and heaps of guys hanging around with the same umbrellas and ponchos for sale. As we moved through them we started bargaining and ended up getting one of the good umbrellas for half price, only €5! Score! So with our fancy new umbrella/pimp stick we headed into the train station to have a look at some of the shops there. After looking around for a while, Darren ended up buying a hoodie that was on sale, and we chatted to the lady at the shop who gave us a recommendation for lunch. So with our new hoodie and new umbrella we headed off down the road to a restaurant called Regina, where Darren had a lasagna and I had some delicious homemade ravioli! So yum. Italian food is the best, and its even better in Italy! Love it. After lunch we decided to go for a walk to try to catch a free walking tour, so we walked quite a way over to the Spanish Steps, using the umbrella as a cane/walking stick/pimp stick. We're so cool. The steps were three levels of huge white staircases, full of tourists and people selling things. We were early, so we found a spot on the steps and just sat and waited for a while, watching the people and getting in lots of photos. At one point Darren made a funny face in the background of a group of Asian tourists, then before we knew it one of them had come up to get a photo with us, then all the rest of them came too! So we got a few photos with about 15 people! So random! It was getting close to the start time for the tour, and they were nowhere to be seen, so we did a few laps of the place with no luck. Some guys selling roses kept coming up and putting them in my face, to try sell them, which was very annoying, then when Darren blocked the same guy that had seen us once or twice with the new umbrella, the guy got really angry and started swearing at him for a while before walking away! So I suppose its okay for them to shove flowers in your face, but not for us to block him with an umbrella! Weird. 4pm came and went with no sign of this tour group, so we decided to just use our map and follow the little symbols to make our own walking tour! So we wandered down to the closest one, Trevi Fountain, which was a massive amazing fountain full of sculptures and statues of horses and gods. It was pretty impressive. Next we kept walking, and went past a wall of massive ancient columns, which we thought was the Pantheon (we couldn't remember exactly what it looked like!), but it turned out to be just some 'unimpressive' square, the Piazza di Pietra. We kept walking and came to te actual Pantheon (oh yeah, that's what it looks like!) which was just amazing. We got some photos then went inside for a look. It was a huge circular room with heaps more pillars everywhere, and as it was a basilica, there were religious statues, paintings and things all around the room. It was pretty cool. But I think we would have been much more impressed at the start of the trip. All the super amazing things seem less super amazing these days after all the crazy things we've seen! After wandering through there a while, we started to make our way back to the hostel, walking past so many crazily impressive buildings and structures which were literally everywhere in the city! And fittingly, there were roman ruins everywhere! As we got back to the train station, we passed a market stall selling bags, one of which I really liked, so we had a look, and ended up buying this really nice bag for jut €10! Now we have extra luggage to store our souvenirs and things in! As we headed back towards the hostel again, we picked a restaurant only based on the name, (which I can't remember, but had something to do with Sicilian something...) and got a table. I had an eggplant parmigiana and Darren had chicken and veggies, and they were okay, despite the fact we watched them pull the food out of a buffet and chuck it in the microwave for a bit before serving it to us! We had a chat with some Americans on the table next to us, then headed back to the hostel. We chilled out for a while and used the wifi, then got some new room mates, two girls and a guy from Korea, then I had a shower before going to bed.
