Kya Travels
When we woke up this morning, we packed up our stuff and after a chat with our new American friends we walked down to the train station, where we bought our bus ticket to the airport then got on and made our way there. There was no attendant putting the luggage on and off the bus, so that was chaos with everyone trying to get their bags before everyone else! But we got them then went inside and went to check in. We got to the desk and then were told with the baggage we had paid for, we could only check one bag! (Even though two together was much less than the 15kg we'd paid for!) It was so annoying! Especially as I had spent about an hour researching that exact thing, due to the ambiguous statement on Ryanair's website, and thought I had the right idea! Damn you Ryanair!! So the guy on the desk did nothing to help us out, and was going to charge an extra €60 to check another bag, so we spent some time rearranging our things to fit into three bags (including having to put the guitar inside my empty bag, then inside its case!), but we got there eventually, then checked the guitar. He wouldn't take it there though, so we had to carry it with us to the gate anyway! We went through security then after walking through the tiny airport (about as big as Avalon!) we were extremely lucky to find two seats together, as there was nowhere near enough seats for the amount of people there! We had some time to kill, so we got a panini each, seeing as we hadn't had one yet, and it was extremely disappointing. Really dry, and just not nice! We chilled out on the seats there for about an hour, playing with a little Philippino boy who was with his mum next to us, and trying to cause havoc! Eventually our flight was called, and we got on a bus out to the plane, then joined the mad dash of people getting to the stairs, trying to get the best seats! We got on, and using common sense, went to the middle of the plane. Because if everyone did that, it would fill up quicker as all the aisles wouldn't be blocked right at the start, like they always are on Ryanair. We had a laugh with the couple in the row in front of us about that, then sat back and watched the madness for a while until everyone was on. We even got a spare seat between us for a bit of extra room, which was nice. We ended up chatting with them, Steve from England and Maria Grazia from Italy, and their sons Daniel and Paul, who all currently lived together in Brussels. They gave us some suggestions on things to do (and which beers to drink) while we were there, then they turned back around and we kept going on our way to Brussels. After a while, Steve turned back around and gave us a piece of paper where he had written up a massive list for us of all the things they'd suggested and more! That was so nice of him! After a bit, we landed in Brussels, said bye to the family and started to make our way out. As we were coming up an escalator, a man behind us a bit fell backwards down the escalator! His wife was screaming too, and we weren't sure, but thought maybe she had gotten stuck at the bottom there! We tried and failed to find the emergency stop button, but luckily someone at the other end found it and there were heaps of people down there helping them out. We waited a minute to make sure they were okay, then headed past the baggage claim (which we didn't have to wait for as we had ended up just taking the guitar on board with us and no one said anything! After all that!) and we ran into the family again. We had a chat with them for a bit more, then went out to buy tickets for the shuttle bus into town, then got on and sat with them. We chatted with them for the whole ride into town, and got heaps more advice, many laughs, and then we got a dinner invitation to come to their house the next night! That was so nice of them! We accepted, and exchanged numbers, and Steve even helped us to figure out where to go to get to our hostel, then when we got off the bus, we grabbed our bags and said goodbye to them. They were so nice! We went down to the metro, grabbed a ticket and jumped on a train out to our stop, Botanique, where we walked to our hostel and checked in. We went up to our room and dropped off our things, then headed back down to the reception and went to the bar out the back to try our first proper Belgian beers! We decided we would take photos of all the beers we try while we're here, then make a collage or something cool with them. We ended up chatting with a couple who were there, Gabi and Guille from Venezuela, and had a good chat and laugh with them. We tried quite a few beers, including one called a Gueuze, which had a sour flavour to it, which was very strange, but I really liked it. Some of the best beers of the night were the Westmalle Triple and the Rochefort. Yum! We ended up meeting a couple of guys from Wales as well, and Darren and Guille played them in a few rounds of pool while Gabi and I chatted. I was pretty wrecked so after a while I dragged Darren away and we went up to bed.
