Kya Travels
We got woken up ridiculously early today, around 6am by the Koreans who were getting ready. Extremely loudly. And they took ages too! It was about an hour until they finally left! So annoying! We went back to sleep for a little bit, then got up while it was still early and got ready. We headed out and passed the breakfast place, where we got our drinks and croissants to takeaway, then walked for about half an hour or so to the markets. We got so far, then didn't know where to go, so we asked for directions then kept going. Then got lost. Then asked for directions. Then kept going. Then did that another two or three times until we were finally pointed in the right direction to the market! We walked in, and the place was tiny, like one street of stalls, which were mostly food stalls! So annoying! We gave up and started walking back to where we had started. And walked right past the market! We walked up and down the aisles full of clothes stores looking at all the jackets. We did a bit of bargaining and spent a lot of time going back and forth. In the end I got a good long warm jacket for only €43 and Darren got a good north face jacket for €35! Bargain! We walked out with our new jackets and came to some more stalls selling smaller things like electronics, beanies, gloves and heaps of random things. We bargained a bit there and ended up getting three beanies for €9 instead of €15. We're getting good at this haggling thing! When we had finished there we went and walked down another street and very soon at the end of the street, the Colosseum came into sight! The actual real life Colosseum! We walked down towards it having a look, and were very disappointed to find (like most monuments in Europe) that part of it was covered in scaffolding! Damn it! We wanted to get some lunch though, so didn't go in, but kept walking to find a place that was rated very highly on tripadvisor to have the best Pizza Bianca in Rome, so we walked past after marveling at the Colosseum for a bit and kept walking down towards this pizza place. We passed a small park we'd heard about, which is the place where Julius Caesar was murdered, which was a small block of roman ruins that was fenced off. I'll get back to that later. So we finally got to the street where we thought this cafe was, and we couldn't find it. We did a few blockies, getting annoyed because we'd walked such a long way and our feet were sore, then decided to just go into a bakery in the square, called Forno Campo de Fiori, which turned out to be the right place! Lucky! We went inside, and it was absolutely packed with people, and even a TV crew who were doing an interview for something. We ordered a Pizza Bianca each, which was like a margarita pizza slice folded in half. It seemed pretty plain, but we got it anyway, and went out and sat on the fountain to eat while we rested our feet. It was so delicious. Very simple but amazing. We figured out that they had another cafe across the street which was associated with it that did more flavours of the same type of pizza, so we went there next and I got a spinach one and Darren got one with mortadella. They were even better. After we'd eaten we started to make our way home on our feet which were pretty sore by this point. I think we need new shoes, these ones were getting pretty wrecked! They were so sore we decided to stop again just up the road and grab a drink to rest our feet for a while, so we went into a bar and I got a coffee (served on a pretty heart-shaped saucer) and Darren got a beer and a hotdog. We used the free wifi there for a little bit then headed off again. We came back to the park where Caesar was murdered and walked around to the back of it where they had some stairs leading down. We walked down the stairs and came into a little place which was actually a cat sanctuary! They take in homeless and injured cats and look after them until they're well, and adopt them out where they can as well, and the cats get the whole block of Roman ruins as their hangout place. It was very cool. There are about 250 cats living in this place and the lady we were talking to there knows every one of their names by sight! If that's not a crazy cat lady, I don't know what is! They were so cute though! I knelt down to pat one of them when all of a sudden, one of the cats, Skye, jumped onto my shoulders and just sat there like a scarf while I wandered around saying hi to all the cats! Skye was my favourite and I wanted to take him with me, but for some reason I don't think customs would let me!! After wandering around there for a while and patting all the cute kitties (and eventually getting Skye off my shoulders!) we left and had a bit of a look over the ruins from the top, playing a game of 'spot-the-cats'! Finally we headed off and after peeking into a massage center went to the bus stop where we caught a ridiculously full bus back to the termini train station, because our feet were so sore! We got off one stop early because the bus was ridiculous then walked back to the hostel. We organised our laundry then I took it down to reception to drop it off, then we hung out in the room for a while wifi-ing and chilling before we headed out for some dinner. We walked up to a pizza place which was rated as the best pizza in Rome on tripadvisor, but when we got there it was closed, so we just got some pizza from a takeaway place across the road called Alice. We took it back to the room to eat, then picked up our washing before heading to bed. After we had fallen asleep the Koreans came back and spent another extremely annoying and noisy hour doing who-knows-what for who-knows-why. Annoying!
