Kya Travels
Today we all woke up a bit hungover, and filled our empty bellies with breads and cheese for breakfast before getting in the car and driving out to a little town about an hour away. We stopped at a few petrol stations to try find some BBQ meat for Darren, but struggled to find anything. Today is a public holiday in Germany meaning everything was closed! We found some sausages at the petrol station in the town when we arrived though! After this we drove a little further and arrived at Christians house, who is the guitarist in Pancho's band, but his girlfriend said he was out walking the dog, so we went into the garage to wait for him. Pancho took us into the basement and showed us the recording studio and rehearsal space where his band plays, which was totally sound proofed and awesome! When Christian came home we said hi then went into the studio to jam! I played the bass, Pancho played drums, Christian played guitar and Darren sang and played another guitar. It was so awesome to play in a band again! We had so much fun!! We started the jam session on a couple of Shanghai Times songs, with a few breaks in between for beers and chats, then when we were all warmed up a bit and feeling more comfortable we started to write a new song! Christian and Pancho play so tight together, they really compliment each other and a riff and beat and bass line very quickly came together! Darren experimented with a few vocals and a rocking chorus came out pretty quickly too, it was magic! The only downfall was we didn't press record so the original verse idea was lost after the first take! We worked on the form and the song came to life! After recording and listening back to a few takes we eventually got one we were happy with and Darren will work on vocals for it and record them when we go home! So exciting! After this we had a break and went for a drive back down to the petrol station where they had a pizza/dönner kebab shop. We ordered some food and took it back to Christians. We ate and finished off all the beers, as well as Darren drinking the rest of a bottle of whiskey that he'd started on yesterday, resulting in a pretty drunken Darren! After lunch we played some more music, and worked on a song from their band. Their band has no singer, so Darren made up some words and a melody for it and it sounded pretty awesome. After working on that one for a while we recorded a good take of it then finished up. Christian did an extremely quick mix on both songs, and they were already sounding awesome. He will continue to mix them and when they're ready he'll email them to us for Darren to record vocals on! New international band?? After this it was about 9pm, so we decided to call it a day and said goodbye to Christian and made the drive back to Dortmund. Back at home we had a pot of tea and chilled out for a bit and Darren disappeared again to get more food. Pancho was pretty exhausted and almost falling asleep on the couch, so I left him to go to bed and went back into Lars' room, waited for Darren to get home, then went to sleep.
