Kya Travels
This morning we woke up and tried to book an extra night, but they had no availabilities, so we packed and checked out and left our bags in the luggage room. We booked a room for the night at a place up the road, then walked up to the metro and got the train to St Michel. We met the Paris free walking tour there, where our guide Roberta introduced herself, with her cute French straw hat and a bird on a stick to keep the group together! We walked around past the Notre Dame, where we learnt that the hunchback never existed but was created to save the church when it was going to be destroyed, as heaps of people read the book and fell in love with the place, also creating a lot of tourism for the place as well. We walked along the river, and past a bridge with lots of carved faces along the length of it. Roberta told us the story (which she hopes is true) of how King Henry IV threw a party and got a photograph of all his friends when they were drunk and got their drunk faces carved and put onto the bridge. It's a funny story and I hope it's true too! We went across another bridge which was absolutely full of padlocks! Apparently lovers come to the bridge and put their padlock on and throw the key into the water, symbolizing their never ending love. Although there were a lot of combination locks on there too which we were told you could put on, go have your fun then come undo the lock and do it over again! Next we walked to the square beside the Louvre where we had gone yesterday, and stopped for a photo op then went and had a lunch break. After the break Darren was feeling pretty gross, so we thought we'd just head back to the hotel and rest, so we tipped Roberta and jumped on the metro back to Anvers. We picked up our bags from the old hostel and walked around the corner to the new one and checked in. Lyle went down to his dorm, but Darren and I had booked a private room so we didn't get anyone sick! We rested for a while, I got some sleep but Darren didn't get any unfortunately, then we got back up and headed back to the metro and to Bir-Hakeim where we got off and walked along a few street stalls to the Eiffel Tower! It was absolutely huge, and (no offense) a little ugly... Who would have thought the most romantic icon in the world looked ugly in real life?! Although it was still daylight, and I had been told it looks much better at night, so we walked up through the gardens and went to a restaurant for some dinner. We got our meals, and when I was halfway through my pesto spaghetti I came across a lump of meat... Ew. Not the best find for a vegetarian! The waiter came and took the meal, and wasn't rude about it but didn't really apologize, as though he thought I was just being fussy and shouldn't have complained... But he didn't charge me for it at least... I just hope I hadn't already eaten any of it! After dinner it was dark so we walked back to the garden out the front to see the place transformed! The tower was lit up and looked beautiful, and had lights flashing all over it! It was amazing! I can't remember who told me to go at night, but thank you! We walked down towards it, and there were people selling champagne, wine and beers, so we got a couple of beers each and got some photos with the tower. They were really hard to take and make look nice, but we got one or two keepers! We met an Aussie guy doing the same thing and chatted to him for a while then went to line up to go up the top! We got in the line and were told that the top of the tower was closed and we could only go to the second floor! Shattered! We went anyway and bought our tickets, then got in the cable car that takes you up. It looked pretty cool going through all those lights and beams and bars and metals. We got up there and walked around the edge with heaps of other tourists looking out over the city, which looked very pretty all lit up. We walked around the couple of levels we were allowed on, then saw a girl crying, and realized she'd just been proposed to. So we gave them a bit of a cheer, then everyone else noticed too and the whole section was cheering them! Pretty cool. After a while we found the stairs and climbed down the tower which was way better than the cable car, it was like climbing through a maze, even though there was only one path! We got to the bottom, took a few more photos then headed back to the metro before the last train left! We lucked out and got what I'm pretty sure was the second last one, so we were still able to make our connection too. We got back to the hostel and hung out in the common room for a bit, where Lyle did a solo Eurotube as it was his last night with us, so he said his goodbyes to the camera then we went to bed.
