Kya Travels
We got up very early this morning, packed our bags and walked down to the tram stop. The tram I was looking for didn't go from there so we walked down a few blocks and found the right one. We got another connecting tram to get to the Amstel train station, and both trams had ticket inspectors who didn't check our tickets! Awesome. We got there and went to the Eurolines office to check in, and was told that Darren wasn't allowed to bring his guitar! Whaaa? So we talked to the driver instead who was fine with it, and even put it in a special compartment so it didn't get broken! But all that talk about the guitar made us realize we had never bought a sticker for it!! Noooooo!! We went into the train station to get some fruit and tried to see if there were any stickers anywhere, but we couldn't find any! So we headed back to the bus and jumped on for our 7 hour trip to Paris! It was a very boring ride and ended up taking closer to 8 hours!! (But at least I slept for more than three of them!) When we finally arrived we waited in a long line to buy our metro ticket, which we got for three days, then jumped on the train and made our way to Gare du Nord train station and walked to our hostel from there. The first thing we thought when we got there was 'holy ****, is this place even open?', there was scaffolding all up the side of the building and it looked kind of shut up... But as we got closer there was an open door, so it was ok! We went in and checked in and had a bit of a chat to the nice girl at reception, then went up to the room to shower and relax for a while. The room was so hot! But not quite as bad as the one in Amsterdam! When it was time, Darren and I left and went to walk to the train station - Lyle had decided to stay home. So we got the train to Bastille, where we worked out which direction we were facing before walking down to the restaurant, Les Portes, where we would be meeting my Aunt, Uncle and cousins!! We were the first ones there so we sat at the table and ordered a drink. Susie and Marco were not long after us, followed shortly by the rest of the family as well as Marco's sisters family. We had an amazing catch up with all of them, it was so nice to see them all again! We ordered our food (entrees AND mains!) and when the entrees came out, we all tucked in. Susie and I shared our vegetarian meals, traditional onion soup and a goats cheese salad, and pretty much everyone else shared their meals around the table. Darren tried all sorts of strange foods, like snails, bone marrow and what was almost a soup!! We talked about our holidays, and received some extremely strong recommendations for Samos in the Greek Islands, where Marco's family is from, and heard all about Susie and Robbies adventures, as they had been backpacking around for a while too. We drank lots of amazing French wine and ate way too much food! By the time the mains had come out I was already so full! Lucky Lola was there to finish them off for us! Then they ordered some desserts too! Argh! So finally when the meal was done, and I thought I was about to explode, and after Susie and I finished talking, we left and stood out the front saying our goodbyes. Everyone left except for us, George and Angus, and we went up the street to find a pub. As we were walking down we got given a card to give us a free shot with any drink purchase, so we went into this tiny bar and ordered a beer and a shot each. It was a pretty cool place, although the music could've been better! After our drinks we ordered another shot. The girl at the bar gave us a good deal on a flaming shot, with another free shot with it, so we ordered that! When she lit them up she gave us straws to drink them with, which was strange but looked awesome. Angus' shot spilled a little and there was a circle of fire on the bench around his glass. It looked pretty cool! After that we had a little dance then headed out to find out when the last train was before heading to the next bar. One place turned us away because of Darren's shoes, (not because the two boys are only 17!) but we went to another small place where we grabbed a beer and sat down and started talking to a bunch of local girls. After a while Darren and I had to leave to get the last train home, but the boys decided to stay a bit longer, and went to a nightclub with the French girls. We got our train back to Gare du Nord, and as we were walking out Darren talked to a guy who didn't speak any English at all, but universal language made them friends, and he opened a bottle of wine that he had and gave Darren a swig of it, as well as a bottle of Heineken! What a champ. As we walked home, we accidentally took a wrong turn somewhere, but after a quick look at the map I was able to get us back to the hostel and to bed.
