Kya Travels
We had a bit of a sleep in today before getting up and walking down to a metro station that I discovered was much closer to the hostel, Anvers. We got the train to Charles de Gaulle and got on the escalator to exit, and as we were riding to the top, the Arc de Triomphe came up into view. It's pretty impressive. A giant archway in the middle of a massively crazy roundabout. We had a look at it for a bit and got some photos, then turned around and went for a walk down the famous street Champs Élysées. We walked down the street for a bit looking for somewhere to stop for lunch, and ended up doubling back to the start of the street and went to an Italian place. We ordered some food there and Lyle told us that he was going to leave us and head back to London and go home early! We weren't totally surprised as he has been pretty homesick and his dad is sick too, but we were surprised that he was going so soon! Only a few days notice, as he was going to leave after Paris. So we had a chat with him about that then kept walking down the street. I stopped at a clothing store called H&M and bought a dress, then we stopped at a pub for a drink. We made our way down to the end of the Champs Élysées and crossed one of the craziest intersections I've ever seen. There were pedestrian crossings but they didn't work, so you literally had to wait til there was time and run across about 4 lanes at a time to the next traffic island. There were about 4 crossings to make before we got to the other side too, it was mental! Once we made it across the road in one piece, we walked through the gardens there, and past the pools and fountains. There was a man standing with a heap of pigeons, and he reached out to shake Lyles hand, and about five pigeons jumped up onto their arms! The man put some seed in Lyles hand and even more flew onto him. I got a go too, which was cool, they were heavier than they look! Two of them started fighting over the last seeds in my hand so I pushed them off and we thanked the man and kept walking. As we walked through another arch, we could see the Louvre up ahead! It was getting into the late afternoon so we didn't go in, but just hung out around it for a while and put our feet in the pool there. That was nice and refreshing. We got on the metro back and walked to the hostel via a fruit shop for some apples and fresh OJ, then chilled out in the room for a while. After a bit we went to get some dinner and walked until we found a French Restaurant that was still open. We ordered some food, and the boys both got some escargot (snails), which were served in the shell this time, but they really enjoyed them still. We got some wine too to celebrate one of the last nights we'll spend together. After dinner we headed back up past the hostel and went up to the Montmartre neighbourhood to find somewhere to have a drink. By (kind of) coincidence we caught sight of the Sacré-Cœur, which is a big pretty church in that region. (I knew it was around there somewhere I just didn't know exactly where) So we went to have a look at it, via ten million or so steps up to it, and then we found the party! There were heaps of young people all sitting up on the steps around the church, probably hundreds, and there were bongos and dancing and people walking around selling beers and glow in the dark things and lazers and souvenirs. It was just a really cool vibe. We got ourselves a spot on the stairs and got some beers and chilled out there for a while. It was amazing. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Paris! I don't know if its an every night thing or just because it was a Saturday, but it was so cool. We had a chat to a bunch of rappers from Ghana then walked back down the steps and went back to the hostel and went to bed.
