Waitomo was only a couple of hours from Rotorua and we arrived in lovely sunshine so we spent the afternoon enjoying the pool at our camp site as the village itself is made up of a shop, pub and a visitor centre so there wasn't much else we could do.
The next morning we went on a caving trip with four other Brits and our guide Rebecca. After donning some lovely wet suits and wellies we abseiled down 27 metres into the cave where we then waded through icy cold water, scrambled over muddy rocks and shimmied through small holes to arrive in the pitch black to see hundreds of glow worms all over the ceiling. It was like star gazing, and they gave off so much light you could still see things around you even after we turned the torches off. After learning more about the glow worm we picked up a rubber ring and black water rafted through the caves in the pitch black and I'm not sure whether it was the dark that was scary or the fact that there were eels swimming beneath us! We then got a chance to squeeze ourselves through some tiny crevices and pot holes in the caves before lastly rock climbing the 20 metres back to the surface.
We had great fun and our group of fellow Brits made it all the better!
