Today we went from the East coast to the West coast which was a long but amazing drive. Along the way we stopped off for some lunch at a lake which had an amazing mountain view. Rich also got creative with some stone stacking with varying results!
The drive into Milford Sound was amazing and very dramatic. We even saw a film crew filming for a Mazda car advert, although apparently this area gets shut down often for filming which is not a surprise. Part of the journey consisted of us going through a tunnel which was one car wide and so dark you could hardly see in front of you! The views on the other side however were worth it. We stayed at the Milford Sound Lodge which happened to be the only site in Milford Sound, so it was a good job we booked. The only down side was that this area is known for its sand flies which you literally could not escape, despite putting on 100% deet bug spray.
The next day we ventured along the river and viewed Milford Sound, although Milford itself consists of a cafe, car park and boat terminal...good job the views were what we went for. In the afternoon we booked onto a kayaking tour around Milford Sound itself. There were five other people plus a tour guide who ventured out into the Sound with us. We donned some lovely stripy thermals before heading out on a water taxi. Once we were in our kayaks we paddled to Stirling Waterfall which we were able to kayak under, which was immense and very wet and windy. We also tried our hat at kayak sailing which was good fun. By the time we ended the tour it was twilight and the moon was out, which provided us with amazing views of the mountains as the cloud started to come in. Overall it was an amazing trip!
