So Melbourne has very well known international comedy festival. (Can't confirm its a fact, but someone once told me that the three big ones are actually Montreal, Melbourne, and Edinburgh.) I was fortunate enough to be here while it's on, so I had to check out a show.
Unfortunately, I'm not up on my comedy. In fact, I really had no idea how to pick which show to go see. There was a lot of Aussi comedians - most of whom I'm sure are hilarious - but when you are looking at a program of hundreds of shows, it can be a little overwhelming.
Luckily, some shows were themed so I decided that was a good place to start. I ended up with tickets to a show called "Aborigin-lol". It was a trio of aboriginal comedians from different parts of Australia. I naively assumed that the content would be a little edgy, probably political and might force me to learn a little big about the land down under.
Boy was I wrong.
It was actually just comedy, and mostly really vulgar comedy. Some of it was funny but it wasn't at all what I was expecting. There was only about 20 people in the room (which was in the basement of a hotel) and five of them were a group of very young people who strolled in late and presumably stoned by the number of snacks they had for a one hour show and their giggling even at the parts that weren't funny. It was quite the comedic experience, if you get my drift (ba-dum-chhh).
Overall, it was a fun night. It was almost funnier that we didn't think the comedy was funny, if that makes any sense. However, next time I try to do the comedy thing, I'm gonna ask around and find a show that comes highly recommended rather than trying to do it on my own.
Live and learn.
Stay weird.
Winter is coming.
