For my last weekend in Oz, two of my work mates (Erica & Kiera) were kind enough to take me on a little road trip west of the city to do the Great Ocean Road! It is a fantastically scenic route that follows the coast from Tourquay to Warnambool. Its windy, hilly, and full of amazing views and quick stops.
We headed out friday afternoon and drove the road to Port Campbell where we stayed for the night. We went to the pub for dinner and I had my first meal of Kangaroo, washed down with a local beer. We had been joking about seeing echidnas all day so we went for the beer that had echidnas on the label.
Saturday we rocked up bright and early as we had a busy day lined up. We started with a quick trip further west to see Bay of Martyre and Bay of Islands. We got there at the perfect time as the sun was poking through the clouds and got to see an amazing double rainbow out over the rocky ocean. After those quick stops we headed back in to town and had breakfast.
The rest of the morning was spent stopping in a various lookouts, beaches, and little hikes along the aptly named Shipwreck Coast. We did the twelve apostles (classic/must see), Loch Ard Gorge (shipwreck location and awesome rock formations), the London Arch (formerly the London Bridge until it collapsed), the Sheoak Falls (waterfall), as well as stops at the Cape Otway Lightstation (the "most significant" lighhouse in Australia - it was the first sign of land that sailors/travellers when travelling from Europe). We also drove through the Great Otway National Park and a bunch of cool little towns - Including Aireys Inlet with the lighthouse from Round the Twist!
Overall, it was an awesome two days. We had a blast rockin out to our great ocean playlist and taking way too many cheesey traveller selfies with the sights. We lucked out on weather just narrowly missing the rain but still getting enough sun to brighten up our day. I also learned a lot about Australian flora, fauna, and music thanks to my two awesome tour guides/friends.
It was a road trip for the books - unlike any other!
Stay weird North America, I'm coming back to you soon!
