So today was good Friday. Campus was closed so I figured it was a good chance to get out and work from a cafe somewhere; get to know the city a little bit. I decided to go down into a neighbourhood called Brunswick.
Everyone has raved to me about how cool Brunswick is. There are endless cafes and pubs and everyone is hipsters riding around on fixie bikes. Needless to say I was pretty stoked.
I knew going down that it was a holiday so likely some shops and restaurants would be closed, but it was nothing like I expected. The street was almost a ghost town and the majority of places that were open were fast food joints. I guess I learned the hard way how seriously they take their holidays down under.
I ended up taking a pretty sweet walk though, found a nice park and a cricket field. So I did get to explore the neighbourhood. I did also find a cafe that was open and got a coffee. I ended up settling in a bar/semi-casino/betting joint (they also take gambling serious here - like very serious), because it had free wifi. And I did have pretty good success at getting work done given the setting.
So today I learned to save my exploring for regular week days and just work from home on the holiday. Brunswick appears to be as cool as it sounds, but I guess I'll have to get back down there to check it out.
Happy Easter everyone! I've actually got a pretty exciting trip planned for my week off. Heading to Tasmania tomorrow with a posse of Canadians.
Stay tuned and keep it weird.
