We woke up early with the warm air coming into our room. We went down for breakfast and, after eating our full of fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice and scrambled eggs, we cycled into town.
We explored the town a bit and then went searching for the white-sand-seaweed-free beaches. Honestly, I think people's expectations of "white sand" are pretty low. Cape Town really does have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. So, chalk one up for Cape Town for our great white sand.... but then chalk up 10 for Mexico and their amazing water - oh my goodness, so warm - you could really stay in the ocean all day! The sun was very hot and even though we were covered in sun cream, we didn't want to fry to a crisp so we packed up, hopped back on our bikes and headed back into town.
We parked our bikes and spent some time looking around a few shops. We then spotted an icecream man on a bicycle. A local had just bought a Popsicle from him and, if I've learnt one thing, it's to follow after the locals - they know the best places! We did a quick detour across the plaza and flagged him down. My non-existent Spanish means that the only flavour I could ask for was "Limon." (lime.... not a bad word to know!) Out of his little cooler came the most beautiful green popsicle with fresh lime pieces at the bottom. We wondered through the streets, surrounded by beautiful Bougainvillea all around us and lime popsicle juice dripping down our fingers... I couldn't help but smile - we were here! And it was amazing!
Our last stop in town was at a small grocery store to buy some goodies to make guacamole and then we cycled home. I quickly made some snacks and we lay in the hammocks overlooking the ocean. It was then time for a siesta and after a lazy afternoon, we cycled back into town and ate at another restaurant, La Pesquero (The Fisherman) The portions of food were American size (huge!) and we neither of us could finish. We decided that we definitely need to share a portion next time!
We cycled home with full bellies and happy hearts - our first full day in Mexico was blissful. We look forward to seeing what the next 4 weeks have to hold!
