Monday 3rd August pm
Our own walk with tour guide Jannie started at the Cathedral and wended it's way around the streets past the house of Edward Heath, past Mompession House built in 1701 for a wealthy merchant. The High Street Gate which was erected in 1327 because of the trouble between clergy and citizens including armed robbery. Originally the gate had a portcullis but now just a great door.
On we went and passed The Old Bookshop which was a rambling 14th century building with it's oak beams and plastered facings. The Old George, an inn, first mentioned in 1378 and Samuel Pepys stayed here in 1668. He wrote that he lay in a silke bed and that the food was good but the bill exorbitant. Nothing changes!!
We walked the river walk past the Town Mill and Harnham Mill found a pub and had a sandwich and beer. We went to the Post office to post a parcel home once again. And eventually we arrived back to our hotel to put our feet up have a cuppa tea around 4.00pm.
Bought a new backpack as the one we bought with us was uncomfortable and kept falling off our shoulders. Talked to Jane about Hotel Picollo in Venice as they have sold and originally they cancelled all bookings after the 19th August but I think all is sorted.
