Wednesday 19th August pm- Vindolanda
We drove to Vindolanda which is a Roman Fort in the heart of Hadrian's Wall and is a working dig that has continued to bring ground breaking discoveries which have included the Vindolanda tablets. At Vindolanda Roman occupation lasted more than 300 years.
The people on the dig are in the main just average people and if you visit the site as a tourist like us and decide that you want to become one of diggers then they will give you enough tuition so that you can then take part in the annual dig.
We also listen to a free tour guide for a bit and decided to do our own thing as he wasn't nearly as Paul had been earlier in the day at Housesteads.
We went through the museum and were surprised that the people on the dig had found more than 6000 leather shoes some of which were on display.
We were glad we went and as our legs and feet were a little on the sore side we wanted to head home.
We were not long home when J&P rang on Jan's tablet and we had a long chat before heading out to the local pub for dinner. We chatted with a local couple at the next table and actually walked part way home with them.
