We are still in Bangkok, got a couple of hours to spare vefore getting our bus to Ko Tao.
Last night we thought we would go to one of the roof top bars recommended by Lonely Planet, unfortunatly we didnt quite anticipate quite how posh the place would be!! In a huge hotel with a band playing in the lobby and a wedding reception taking place upstairs...and we were in typical backpacker attire...flip flops and creases. However they didnt turn us way just provided us with some lovely shoes and a skirt for Merryn. The roof bar was on the 59th floor of the skyscraper and the views were amazing, though we didnt feel like we could afford a drink so after having a mooch about and taking a few pics we decided to head off...back to Khao San Rd for food, beers and cocktails....ended up at a very different type of roof top bar, a lot lower down with more like minded people. There was also aThai band there playing typical Uni classics.
Today we tried to be a bit cultural and headed off to the National Museum, which we raced around as it was horrendously boring. Next, we tried to find a place where Monk offering bowls are made (the last surviving village in Thailand that makes them, it takes a day to complete one bowl), after some navigational difficulties we made it there and it was a bit of a culture shock to say the least. We were directed by a rickety old sign towards a little girl who told us to follow her...we followed her through this village which was a combination of small wooden building and clothes seperating different living spaces....we could really see the village in a basic way, there were no other tourists and everyone was going about there daily routine, many making things in workshops and the women washing whilst their children played. We got a little bit scared as we followed the little girl past a group of guys counting out some money!! we made a flying visit through, saw how the bowls were made and then felt a bit like we were intruding so we headed off...we would have both liked to have taken pictures but felt it would have been a bit intrusive and innapropriate. On our way back we stumbled across the Golden Mount...another Buddist temple built on a mount by the King, had some great views across the city.
We have a few hours now waiting for our bus to Ko Tao, just watching a film in the hotel bar so might try upload some pictures soon. Both looking forward to getting to the sea!
