We started the day with a stop at Epidaurus where there was a museum celebrating the beginning of medicine. Ancient people used to visit priests here to be cured of illnesses and eventually the priests became the first doctors. One of these was Hypocrites. We saw some of the medical instruments which had been unearthed. Near the same sight we also saw a very well preserved theatre. We had a local guide George who stayed on the bus as we travelled on to Mycenae.
At Mycenae, we saw a very well preserved tomb, which was one of many in the area called beehive tombs. Massive stones had been used to build large beehive shaped structures which were then covered over with earth and made to resemble a natural hill. We also looked through the museum displaying many artefacts before walking up through a structure called the Lion Gate. Then we climbed up to another Acropolis on a hill which provided some great views over the valley and on a distant hill, we could see what was supposedly the reclining figure of the ancient King Agamemnon at rest on his back.
We had lunch of stuffed tomatoes and greek salad at a local cafe before seeing a pottery demonstration at a local Mycenaean art studio. We bought a couple of small pieces before heading off to Olympia while listening to relaxing Greek music on the audio system.
We checked in to the Hotel Antonios at 6:30 and were welcomed with Ouzo and nibblies which was nice. I won't say too much about this hotel as nothing could compare to last night's.
Dinner tonight was preceded by a cooking class at the nearby Touris Club and after a sumptuous meal there was plate smashing and greek dancing where everyone was involved.
It was a great night...the Greeks really know how to enjoy themselves.
