This morning we started at the Olympia Museum where we met our guide Nike (Nikki) who shared a lot of her considerable knowledge about the history of Olympia. She then led us down to the archeological site where there are many remains of the buildings, temples and the ancient stadium. We bought some souvenirs and had lunch before heading off for Delphi.
We crossed over the Gulf of Corinth via the Rio–Antirrio bridge which is the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge and was completed in 2004 just in time for the Athens Olympics. We stopped at the small village of Nafpaktos for refreshments at a little alfresco cafe located beside a very pretty little boat harbour before continuing the drive along the scenic north shore of the Gulf of Corinth. Eventually we turned inland and up into the mountains towards Delphi. In winter, Delphi is a ski resort town but today it was very hot.
We checked in to the Hotel Amalia and enjoyed a sumptuous buffet dinner before spending some time on the large public balcony chatting with Bill and the others about Istanbul.
