Lorna and Kemi reunited= 4 day Queensland Roadtrip in our 'Breezer' Campervan exploring the amazing Wet Tropics World Heritage Site, waterfalls, rainforests and doing things true backpacker style!
I ended up going out with Dave and Becky in Darwin for my last night in Darwin and stayed out til 2am and then just got on the shuttle to the airport at 2.30am! Night flight to Cairns and arrived 8am! I waited an hour to meet Lorna from her flight- was so excited to see her! We then went and picked up our new best friend for the next 4 days...A 'Breezer' Campervan for our roadtrip around the Wet Tropics in North Queensland. Lorna doesn't have a license so all the driving was down to me. I hadn't driven a manual car for months and it was pretty embarrassing that I thought there was a problem with the clutch when I tried to get the camper in gear for the first time...to later figure out my foot was pressing down the brake instead of the clutch...oh dear this was going to be interesting!! Haha, no actually once I got back out on the road I really enjoyed driving again. We didn't waste any time, we stocked up at the supermarket and brought a lovely box of Goon to treat ourselves lol. We headed south first and basically spent the next 2 days stopping at different parts of the World Heritage Area. Those navy boys I met in Darwin were originally from Cairns so they had given me tips of amazing waterholes and waterfalls to go to, which were a bit more off the beaten track. Lorna and I made sure we went into every one-though some were absolutely freezing and we got paranoid about crocodiles when we were at places where no one else was, but we survived and it was so much fun! We also went to the Millaa Millaa waterfalls...which Peter Andre filmed his major hit 'Mysterious Girl'. So funny! We explored the Atherland Tablelands and it was so green. The weather was mixed as we were in the 'Wet Tropics' so we had a mix of rain, sunshine and rain again-but it was never cold! We parked up a beachfront in a small town on the coast for our first night and made a nice dinner and enjoyed a glass of wine under the stars. They were amazing as barely any light around at all. The thing I love about Australia is that it's so big that at most beaches you can be the only people there, it's great! We were both exhausted after no sleep the night before so we slept well. The camper was small but good enough for two. The day couches converted into a double bed and in the back there was the storage area and sink etc. Luckily the van had a CD player too and Lorna had a load of CDs so we could sing to our hearts content as we cruised down the empty highways!
Next day we went to Lake Eacham and dived straight in. Again, having so much fun with my underwater digital camera! We met this really cute old couple who were doing their own mini roadtrip of the area as a trip down memory lane as it was their 50th wedding anniversary and they had explored the area during their honeymoon. So cute. We went to more waterfalls and walked through rainforest on little trails. It was so cool. That night we drove back up past Cairns and went to Port Douglas- where the rich and famous go apparently in Queensland. Lovely restaurants, a pretty harbour and the famous '4 mile beach' make Port Douglas a nice place for a holiday...we went out for a drink and had dinner right by the beach again. We weren't tired to sleep so we decided to carry on north to sleep up by the ferry so we could get across to Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation first thing in the morning. We actually got eaten alive when we woke up and I literally got about 30 bites on my leg in 5 minutes as we had parked up right in the bush. Stupidly we had kept forgetting to buy mozzie spray to, so we ended up jumping straight in the van and driving to the nearest store to pick up the highest strength stuff we could find! Luckily we weren't stinking yet as we were constantly dipping in and out of the freshwater lakes and waterfalls. Though Lorna was desperate to wash her hair as she thought it was so greasy so true backpacker style she washed her hair out the back of the camper. We got the 5 min ferry ride across the Croc infested water to get to the heart of the Daintree World Heritage Area and Cape Tribulation- the only place in the world where the rainforest meets the reef! The coastal drive into Cape Trib was stunning! The rainforest was beautiful! After spending the day exploring we took the coastal drive back down to Cairns, it was stunning. We stopped to see the beautiful sunset at Holloways Beach near Cairns. The next morning I went for a run along the beach at sunrise and then we hung out by the beach until we headed into the city of Cairns to check into our party hostel Gilligans for the next 4 nights.
We walked along the beach, did rainforest trails, spotted a Python sleeping next to the boardwalk and even got up close and personal with a massive Lace Monitor lizard! We had so much fun on our 700km road trip-definitely glad we decided to hire a camper and do it ourselves rather than just on an expensive organised tour! I loved the freedom of roadtrippin' at your own pace!
