Next stop Fiji, after my long night flight (after being upgraded the first time and flying with BA, it was a bit of a shock to fly with Air Pacific (meant to be Quantas but they used this carrier for certain destinations) anyway I arrived in Fiji at 6am it was still dark, I had to wait an hour for my transfer to the port and saw the sun rise and then blue sky. Woohoo! Then went to the port where I was going to start my island hopping adventures for a week. I got on the boat and it was already packed, I ended up sitting by this New Zealand guy and we got chatting about diving as he was also qualified but was way more advanced than me, he'd done over 100 dives! There seemed to be about two massive school trip of Americans being loud on the boat and most people hoped they were getting off at a different island. Luckily they were and got off at one of the first. I had decided to start at Coral View, one of the northern islands furthest away so I could work my way back down. The first few islands, Beachcomber (party island), Bounty Island (where they filmed Celebrity Love Island) etc, is where most people got off. Then we had a lot more space on the boat. I ended up chatting to some German guys, Alex and Eugene and they were with this American guy called Matt, who was from Kansas...his accent was great! They were also going to Coral View too so that was cool. It was so hot and the boat was over 4 hours to get to our island but we pasted so many amazing sights on the way so got lots of nice pictures and just relaxed. Then this American girl Sarah got chatting to us and she was also going to Coral View so the 5 of us just chatted on the rest of the boat ride. When we went to check in Sarah and I went together to try and get a room together and this is where we met Rachel, from Manchester who was also by herself. We all got on so well and from there on we always together. We had our group in Coral View and had so much fun, the girls, and Alex, Eugene and Matt. There was a 20 bed dorm there but we were lucky and got put in a 6 bed room with our own bathroom! Yey! We were sharing with some german girls who were also sweet. Quieter than us lot at first (Yeah yeah hard to believe I know). We went to explore the island and met the boys out snorkelling. The water was warm and but its really shallow, even if you walk out for ages its still shallow. We hiked up the hill to get an amazing view over sea and our backpackers resort. The food on Coral View wasn't great, but knowing how fussy I am I wasn't expecting it to be great. Rachel was actually fussier than me so it made me feel not as bad, it was funny though, we had both put on our special requests no fish and no curry and guess what the first night dinner was 'fish curry' I nearly died. Haha. But we said something and they just gave us a pile of toast. Oh well not eating much for a few days wouldn't do me much harm!!! That night some northern lads joined us and there was about 10 of us and I had a pack of cards so we started playing drinking games and I have never...was very funny indeed.
The next morning I went on the cave swimming trip, it was amazing. The boat ride there was so choppy. We were sat at the back and got absolutely soaked, was funny though. We swam into these caves and then had a look about. Then we had to swim underwater to get to the next cave. Some people were getting freaked out but it wasn't scary. The next caves were pitch black, our guide had a torch with him but once we all got under he turned it off for a second and did this massive loud echoing noise, scared the hell out of us all. Was pretty funny though. Explored the caves for an hour then headed back to shore. That afternoon we went on a boat trip across to Blue Lagoon, where the actual film was set. It was a nicer beach here and snorkelling was good.
Coral View was a great place, the staff were all so friendly, the staff all greeted us, and they all managed to remember all of our names for the whole trip...I don't know how they did that!
The next morning I decided to go on the shark dive encounter!I hadn't dived for 9 months but as I was certified I could go on this trip and they just went over the basics again and it all came back to me. It was wicked. The instructors took down two wheelie bins full of dead fish and dumped in in a pile about 21 meters down, we were then stood behind this small rope (not that that could have stopped them coming towards us!!) and then we just watched hundreds of fish and different types of sharks come to feed. We weren't lucky enough to see any massive ones (as there were 4M fat ones) but we saw ones over 1 ½ M which still is pretty big. I wasn't that scared though. I wanted to see bigger ones. Was great to be diving again though I love it.
We moved to Korovou Eco Resort for a couple of days, this had better food and a pool as well as being on the beach but the staff weren't quite as friendly. Saying that, Sarah and I befriend one of the staff who stole the keys to the 'honeymoon suite' so we could go and have a hot shower!!!! Oh my god, it was bliss!! I think i forgot to mention there isn't any hot water on most of the islands!!!!!!!
The second time I went diving there was only three of us and we didn't have to wear a wetsuit. It was a cool experience. The water is like 27c and it was nice to feel a bit more 'free' and just dive in your bikini and the equipment. We saw two turtles on the surface as we pulled up. It was amazing. Sadly we didn't spot any turtles when actually down on the dive. But my instructor showed us lots of different types of corals and motioned to us the ones we could touch, I hadn't done this before and she picked up sea cucumbers and we saw magic coral which changed colour when you touch it, was pretty amazing. As well as all the different types of fish and coloured corals. I love diving.
Fiji was stunning. At southsea resort we did a crab race and the top prize was a free dive!! Rachel also went in for it too so in case she won she would pass the dive onto me as she didn't wanna dive and knew I wanted to do one more. She won! Amazing, so i got to do one final dive the morning before we left to go back to the mainland. It was amazing.
Made amazing friends, enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and swimming, snorkelling and diving. Absolutely loved it. So sad to say goodbye to my girlies out there. But on I go to New Zealand....can't wait!
