Jono's Travels
To Rome today, which included a stop on the way in Orvieto. Orvieto is a city sitting on top of some cliff faces, because of its site on a high, steep bluff of volcanic rock, the city was virtually impenetrable. We rushed to the bottom of the cliff to beat a coupe of other groups which were also planning on heading up. In order to get to the top we had to take a kind of train up, once at the top we took a quick walking tour, because we had rushed past the other groups at the bottom, it meant we had more room to look around with less people. There were certainly some great views from the top overlooking to fields and valleys below. We headed up to the main square and saw Duomo Di Orvieto, which was constructed in the 1200's. Apparently it was created as a miracle happened a napkin got covered in wine and it had the face of Jesus on it, so... They built a giant church. We went inside hoping to take glimpse of this napkin, but alas no, none of us got to see it, it must be hidden away somewhere. It did however give me the opportunity to get a look inside the church and see the artwork inside. After a quick look around I headed to a shop to grab some food, apparently some of the best wild boar meat, which I thought just tasted rather plane and normal to me. After lunch it was a quick dash back to the meeting spot to meet up with the others before heading back down to the bus and began our last part of the trip to Rome. By this stage I was rather tired and slept a lot of the way until we reached Rome. Upon reaching Rome we heading straight onto a guided walking tour of the main sites by Sabrina, and while I couldn't tell you exactly all the places we saw, I can say they were all spectacular. Below is a list of just some of the places I visited today: Piazza del Popolo Trevi Fountain (an amazing fountain, about 3,000 euro is grown in it a day) Pantheon (huge building being used as a church) Altare della Patria, this place had a bronze horse statue outside which is so big that 12 people sat and ate a meal inside the belly when it was being made. Flavian Amphitheater (aka. The Colosseum) from the outside, I'll look inside tomorrow. Along the way checking out these amazing sites we got some dinner as well as had some gelato as a dessert from this shop that has 150 different flavour, so many options it is hard to pick one, so... We had three small flavours instead, my favourite out of the three was Mousse Bounty... So good that I can't explain it, it's beyond words. After the gelato it was on to visit the Colosseum. Amazing building, so looking forward to popping into it tomorrow. We caught the train back to the hostel so we could actually heck in, along the way loosing Anthony at the train station as he wasn't quick enough getting on the train, we all hoped off at the next station and then jumped onto the next train so we would be on the right train with him. We all got to the hostel in one piece and checked into our rooms before we headed to the bar for a final farewell for those that are leaving tomorrow, most of them will be with us throughout the day, but two leave at 4:30 in the morning, so it was a good chance to say farewell to all. Bed time as tomorrow I'll be heading off early to the Vatican.
