Jono's Travels
Woke up early this morning at about 5:45am, rather cold, despite setting the air-con last night at a nice temperature it seems it has a mind of its own and was changing its temperature on its own and was running real cold, so shut off the air-con, got a blanket from the cupboard and jumped into bed to start yesterday's blog entry. Up and off to breakfast at 8 this morning, it was probably the best breakfast we have had so far, with a nice selection of foods and actual some good hot chocolate I was pretty full after breakfast. In saying that, I was still pretty full from last nights dinner. We headed off on the bus to Florence, seeing where we are staying is about 30 minutes drive we all hoped on the bus and headed into the city. Along the way I still enjoyed looking at the trees as they reminded me of home. We arrived and walked along the road until we met our local guide for the tour of the city, Sabrina isn't allowed to guide people around the city as they only allow local people to do this. The guide took us down the road and showed us a bunch of things. One of these things was a bridge which at the time it was created was used as a meat market, purely as it was easy to dispose of the dead bodies when they were bad. This is now a bridge where the sell jewellery, but still sold in the same stores as where the meat was sold from. We then made our way into the square to del Duomo, the cathedral of Florence. From the outside this thing was huge and amazing to look at, made from several different types of marble and started in 1296 taking nearly 200 years to complete finishing in 1475. The cathedral is actually two types of architecture due to the length of time it took to make, Gothic Revival and Renaissance. The dome on the top was created with no support scaffolding for supporting the dome, this was designed in a way that it would support itself as it was built, very clever if you ask me, especially if you see the size of it. We then made our way to a leather making factory where they make a bunch of rather products as well as silver and gold jewellery. There products were impressive and while I don't where rings. I was very tempted to purchase a puzzle ring which was created for Henry the 8th to give to his wives/mistresses so he could tell if they were unfaithful, as it would fall apart once removed... Well that's the story we heard anyway. From there it was onto discovering Florence on our own, but not without getting a bite to eat first from a sandwich shop that had queues out the door, this place was so popular they even opened another shop selling exactly the same right across the road from the original shop, if you ever get to Florence and feel like a sandwich for lunch, then find All'antico Vinaio, it's really filling and it taste pretty good, don't worry too much about the line, it moves rather quickly. After lunch I took a look at some of the churches, while some looked really impressive from the outside, I wasn't overly impressed by the inside, probably because I've seen some even more impressive churches already on this trip. I then took off to a Magnum ice-cream shop which I heard you can make your own flavour. Upon arrival I went in found out what happens, you pick your flavour ice cream, eg vanilla or chocolate, you pick 3 different toppings, (Coconut, raspberry crunch and one dark biscuit for mine) they then dip your ice-creme into what flavour topping you wanted, original, white or dark chocolate. Then they pour your toppings over top and you wait for it to dry a little. It was very tasty and perfect way to finish off the walk of the city. I then made my way toward the observation point and ran into Olivia, Imogen and then Rachel and Kate turned up so we all made our way up to the observation point together. Apparently a 30 minute walk from the spot we were at, we achieved it in about 12 even in the 27 degree temperature. The view overlooking the city was fantastic and I'm so glad I got a chance to get up the top to take good look over the city. Back to our drop off point so we could meet the bus and catch a ride back to the campsite. By the time we got back to the campsite we had a very short timeframe before heading off to dinner, so it was a quick shower, change of clothes and then back onto the bus to make our way to Villa Buonasera winery for a wine tasting and dinner. The owner is called Christian and is a really nice guy, all the girls hearts started to race after gazing their eyes upon him, and even more so throughout the evening with his great personality. His Mumma is the cook for meal we have tonight and he always said before our next course, "OK, take you time and enjoy the wine, I will go see if Mumma is ready... But I think she will be." Now, him mumma did not look old enough to be his mumma, perhaps an older sister, but certainly not his mumma. It was a four course meal, of which after the first course I was even getting full, so I had to try pace myself. Very tasty meal in deed, and the wine itself we really nice, produced Chianti Classico style, and while the were all made with the same grape, you could taste the difference between them all depending on how they had led the grape. The second wine we tasted was my favourite out of the three reds, I wasn't too much a fan of the dessert wine that we had which is a shame, as I do like dessert wines. We got some bottles each and then headed back to our campsite so we could either sleep, drink or head to the disco bar for some dancing and drinking. Those of us that decided to go to the disco bar arrived a little early, so we decided to head outside and watch a bunch of people dancing, it appears that the staff get out on stage every night and dance and get the crowd to join in. Conner got up and joined in for a dance and afterwards sat back down while some other songs played, then some Bachata came came on.. Well I couldn't let that pass me by, I got Imogen up on the dance floor who had never danced Bachata before and I lead her though it, she did really well seeing she hadn't dances before, I was very impressed. By this stage the disco bar was now open, so we headed in and watched the bar tender make us some shots and then pour us some drinks, I chose not to drink a litre of Vodka and red bull like I did the night before, he makes them too strong for me, instead I chose a sex on the beach, a lot less alcohol in it and it still tastes good to drink. The bar tender does some pretty cool stuff with a straw which I saw him do the night before so I tried to capture it on video, but it was a bit dark so don't think it would be very clear if I posted it online, I might try brighten it when I get back home.
