Jono's Travels
So, part of the reason I left early last night was so I could go for a run, Nice is probably the first place that I felt would a comfortable enough place to go for a run, so I woke up at just after 7 and got a quick shower before heading out just before 8am. Heading down to the beach and then hanging a left I ran toward the stairs that lead up to the observation point, only to find that stairs were closed for another 30 minutes. Instead of hanging around the stairs waiting for them to open, I though I would just carry on down the road and see what was around the corner. I took a small run out to the end of the pier and took a look around at the big yachts. There weren't many super yachts, but just plenty of smaller ones. I continued down the road and came across a road that headed up the hill, I could only assume it would take me to the top of the observation point so I continued up this in the hopes it did. Finding a footpath with some stairs I diverted off the road and carried on up the stairs to the top... What a view from the observation area. I took a bunch of pictures from the top before heading down the other side of the hill with the stairs that I could only hope we're open by now, which they were. Getting down onto the flat again, I headed down the beach shore for a few kms before turning back to the hostel to have some breakfast. Such a warm day and it's only 9:30 or so by the time I get back to the hostel. Getting back to the hostel I headed to breakfast and ran into Sabrina, Rachel and Kate who suggested heading off to the beach for a picnic lunch today, so we all headed out and grabbed some food and did some other stuff on our own and we organised to meet at some giant metal statue. Ryan, Fabian and I then headed out I grab some supplies for lunch, bread rolls, some meat, cheese and lettuce was all we needed to make some great delicious lunch. We then headed down to meet the others at the beach. The beaches are made of rocks and stones, for those that have been to the beaches in Kaikoura or on the South Island west coast, then you will know what it's like, it's not like running along sandy beaches like in Baywatch. Picnic lunch was nice and straight afterward and few of us took a dip in the ocean, very refreshing, unfortunately Fabian was so keen, he jumped in before he remembered he still had his wallet on him, whoops. After a quick dip, Ryan, Fabian and I decided to head out tubing in the sea. I was the first to come off followed by all of us, in one go, and then a few more times with us coming off at different times. I had never dune it before, and was surprised how much strength you needed to hold on as we are flung from side to side. Once upon we were upon dry land again Fabian and I headed back to the hostel to quickly change and head off to H&M, a large clothing store, in this shops case it was 3 stories, two of which was dedicated to woman's clothing and a quarter of the 3rd floor to babies clothing and the rest being men's clothing. I found me a nice pair of shoes or two and another shirt (short sleeve collared shirt) and then headed back to the hostel to quickly get ready to head off to Monaco to take a look around before heading to the casino. After getting ready for the casino we met downstairs, the women all looked fabulous. We jumped onto the bus ever so quickly due to the spot Ronnie had to pick us up at, essentially no room for any traffic except his bus, so we had to be ready to go when he pulled up. We then made our way to Monaco, but on the way got to take in some even higher sites overlooking Nice and then visited a perfumery along the way called Fragonard. We arrived at Monaco and found that emerged are setting up for the Monaco Grand Prix, this got Ronnie very excited, so much so, that he even started the bus from start line and zoomed off (safely of course). Although I'm not sure what excited Ronnie more, the racing the bus from the starting line, or the Porsche 918 he zoomed past in Bus, the first he had ever seen in person. We got dropped of and took a quick look around Monaco and headed up to the the Prince's Palace of Monaco which was originally built in 1191 as a fortress, eventually over its history it was captured by Francois Grimaldi, who dressed up with 2 other people as monks on a dark stormy night with there swords under their monk robes, the lord of the palace let them in as they were really wet and then went back to bed, only to be woken by Francois Grimaldi stealing over him as he slaughtered him. Our next stop was the Monte Carlo casino. While the building is beautiful from the outside and throughout, I wouldn't really recommend going there to gamble unless you really just like roulette or want to spend 20 euro minimum per had of blackjack. This casino is rather small inside compared to what we have back home, granted... It's the Monte Carlo Casino, so I did feel obliged to play at least one or two rounds of roulette, or a few more, but at 5 euro per bet, my limit didn't last long, and no, I didn't walk away with any money on this trip, that's probably because this casino doesn't have ***** as an option. We did however have a win at least from our group, Rachel put down a single 5 euro, that's all she got changed and I can only assume all that she was going to play, and while she wanted to put it all on 26 (day of the month she was born on), she chose to put it half 25 and half 26, the ball was flung around the wheel and what number came up... 26, so while her 5 euro didn't win her the 40 to 1 payout, she got 20 to 1 payout, so won 100 euro. She played a couple more rounds and let it drop down to 65 euro before leaving the table and cashing out. Yay for her. By this stage it was time to head back to the hostel, upon arriving we all headed off to our rooms and packed our bags to get ready for our trip tomorrow to Italy.
