Jono's Travels
I've arrived in Greece this morning on the ferry a little after 8am. It was good to finally say I'm in Greece despite spending the last few hours being on a boat that was set an hour forward for Greece even though I still hadn't been there yet.
No technology for the next few days as we sail, so everything you read for the next few days will have already been written down by hand.
Now the no technology isn't because I'm sailing and aren't allowed technology, it's not because I'm out of battery either, it's because the girls didn't think I could cope without the tech. While I've proved other people wrong on this in the past, I'm taking up the challenge. My apologies for not getting these up sooner.
So I popped down to the local supermarket and got myself a pad and pen, Yeap... Resorting onto old school stuff which I haven't used in years. I originally tried to get an unlined pad so I could try some sketching, but they didn't have any of that, so lined paper it is.
Sitting down at a cafe I kind of felt like a coke addict must feel when they are in a room full of others taking coke and can't touch it, as everyone is on their phones doing Facebook and chatting to friends back home.
Oh and I forgot to mention one exception to the rule. I am allowed my camera and battery pack so I can take photos and charge the camera. I have also had to give up my GPS watch for the next few days as well, the downside of this is I can't track where we are sailing, which I had hoped to track, but oh well.
I ended up heading back to the shop with Fabian and we brought some snorkels and masks for swimming with, not exactly the cheapest they had, but if they are any good then I may bring them back to replace what I have in my scuba kit at home.
We all headed to the yachts and met our skippers/captains, our yachts captain was Damitrios, he showed us the things on the boat we needed to know like the rooms, kitchen, toilets etc. To be honest I'm actually surprised by the amount of space inside the yacht. The yacht itself is a 50 foot yacht and had 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (also showers) as well as a kitchen/living area. After we packed away our gear in our cabins and had all our supplies onboard we headed off to sail around one of the Islands.
We sailed for a couple of hours of which I was fast asleep in the sun for at least 30 minutes, after waking to find an imprint of the deck all over my chest. We then stopped for a swimming break and some food. I was first in and the water was beautiful. I was asked if the water was warm, but aim not sure if a kiwi is the right person to ask on that question, all ocean water seems warm compared to what we are use to in New Zealand. But yes, it certainly felt warm compared to other places like Nice, probably even warmer than the pools at some of the places we stayed.
After the swim we had a quick feed before sailing away again, but obviously we couldn't let lunch go by without a drink on top of the sailing boat in the wonderfully warm sun.
We then made our way to our stop for the night in Petriti, trying a number of times to get sailing, unfortunately the wind was just too inconsistent and we were putting the sail up and down so often we resorted to he motor most of the trip, finally getting a good amount of wind for the last 30 minutes or so.
During the trip Ronnie was asking me if I was doing a journal, I said no and that I was doing a blog, but then realised that it's not really a blog until it goes online. I was then asked what blog stood for, I wasn't really sure and question Fabian on the off chance he knew, "Ummm, not sure, maybe Big Load Of Garbage" he replied. Who knows, he could be right, But I can't ask Mr. Google as I'm not allowed my phone to check, Ronnie laughed when he heard the response and started giving me flack about it, but all in good fun.
We pulled into dock and just relaxed on the boat drinking Vodka drinks and even downed Johnny Walker Black Label drinks. While we sat, some of the other guys from our other boat came over and joined us and we sat around and chatted for a while until it was time to head off to dinner.
We had to meet for dinner at a certain time, and while I don't have my watch, I've been pretty spot on with time, by plus or minus 5 or 10 minutes, more the fact that I've been able to estimate the time based on the last time it was.
We when someone asked what the time was, I just looked up at the sun and looked back and said, hmmm about 6:30 or so, someone then checked and I was almost spot on. Dinner was just a few minutes walk from the dock, you could literally see to restaurant from out yachts. We made it to the restaurant and they brought out our entree which was Tanzeki and some bread. It was so good, freshly made, really tasty and better yet, plenty of it. After polishing that off they brought out our main meals which we had ordered earlier, as I don't really do fish that often I chose the Chicken and I was very happy with my choice.
There want really a dessert, however a lot of us decided to go buy an ice creme which was very reasonably priced. Afterwards we were suppose to do some Greek dancing, most of the group were pretty tired from the day so went back to the boats to sleep, while a few of us remained and had a few more drinks before retiring for the evening.
