Jono's Travels
Up this morning not knowing what time of day it was, simply because I didn't have my watch, I got up out of bed and headed up on deck, looking at the sun I guessed it was about 8:30 basing it on the fact so thought the sun came up about 5am, turns out the sun comes up at about 6am and It was 9:30am. I estimated the hours correctly, just not the time the sun came up. I actually remembered a way of calculating the time roughly based on using your fingers from something I read in a survival book years ago. Sabrina arrived at the boat with some fresh bread and we started to cook breakfast seeing it was just her and I up. We got the gas cooker on and cooked up a feed of bacon and scrambled eggs. After breakfast we up'd anchor and made our way to a nice spot to swim, Fabian and I grabbed our snorkel gear and tried to adjust them, while I gave up on adjusting it at first and jumped in without it, Fabian continued and worked out how to adjust the masks. The water was better than the day before, still not that clear, but certainly warmer. We swam over to the other boat and had a few goes of jumping off the front of it, while the boat was a little away from our one, it didn't matter so much if we got tired swimming between the two as there is so much salt in the water that it's quiet hard to sink in it. Up'd anchor again after about an hour or so and then we continued onto the next swimming spot. just off the coast of Corfu. This place was even better than the last, not only was the water warmer, it was even clear, being able to see 5meters down to the bottom without a problem. Most of us swam over to the shore and enjoyed a little bit of skimming stones before heading back to the boats. We then headed to port in the Corfu port. Upon arriving we all grabbed what we needed and made our way into the town. Most of the groups did their own thing, and somehow I was left on my own to explore the place, I headed off to the "Old Fortress" and took a look around slowly heading to the top trying to not miss too much. Seeing we had pulled into dock about 3pm, I had plenty of time to look about before having to head back to the boat to meet the others for dinner. Arriving at the top of the fortress I took in the views. On one side of the fortress looking out to Greece and some other islands, the other side looking out at Albania which was clearly visible. I then headed back down the fortress and made my way into town and walked a few of the markets. After having a look though the markets I headed down the coastline to he other side of the island and found what looked like a different fortress (which it was), so I decided to try and find the entrance. I seemed to walk street after street, eventually finding the entrance to the fortress only to find it had closed at 3:30. So instead I just headed back to the boat as it was getting close to 5pm. On the way back I ran into Ronnie and Sabrina near the boat so we sent back & had a couple of drinks at the boat while we waited for the others to meet us at 6:30 so we could head to the restaurant for dinner. Fabian and Eloise turned up at the boat with some Baklava, I somehow heard 'Buck Liver' when I was offered some, I figured sure, why not try. To my surprise it was very sweet, I had thought that it would be something like a sausage roll seeing I had heard 'Buck Liver'. We went to dinner at a restaurant in a tucked away street that you would only find if you were a local or had been shown that place before. The prices were very reasonable and so as we were in Greece I decided to have a Chicken Souvlaki and a coke. Everyone's drink came out except mine and Imogen's, while Imogen wanted alcohol in hers, I didn't, but they were out of Vodka so hers didn't come, I assume they just skipped mine too thinking I wanted vodka too. I decided to wait and just see how long it would take, The meals came out, but still no drink, by this time Imogen had ordered a plane Sprite which had come out but mine hadn't, Sharie followed up with waiter for my drink. By this time I was getting rather tired, most likely related to the heat and the amount of activities I had done during the day. My meal reached me eventually and I found that it's no a Souvlaki as I would expect, it was more like a kebab on a stick but without the stick along with some salad. I find it funny that back home if I order a Souvlaki I get what I expect, Pita bread, meat, salad and sauces. If so go to a kebab place I can get either a kebab on a stick or a souvlaki, yet here in Greece a souvlaki is a kebab on a stick without the stick. After dinner they brought out some red slices of fruit, not knowing what they were I would wait until someone else had tried one before I took a bite. Turns out that the fruit was just a pear dipped in cinnamon, not sure where the red colour came from though, but it was very tasty. We went our separate way after dinner with Conner, Ryan and myself making our way back down some ransom streets just to look around before heading back to the boat. The guys weren't too sure where we were going, but as I had already walked up and down the streets today I knew where I was going "without GPS". We eventually got back to one of the boats and had a vodka & Sprite before heading up to the bar which overlooks the port where we are staying for the evening. Not really anything to say apart from the fact that we hair drank and chatted while enjoying the view overlooking the port and the old fortress at night.
