Jono's Travels
Today we are heading from Meteora to Kavala, Apparently it's a fill in stop as we can't get all the way to Turkey in one go. I don't care though as I'm still feeling terrible, so I plan to rest on the bus as much as I can. I skipped breakfast this morning as I wasn't feeling hungry and felt it better that I rest as much as possible. We made a few stops along the way for the toilet breaks and compulsory rest time Ronnie is required to take, but it gave us time to stretch our legs and have something to eat. I tried to find some cold and flu medicine at our lunch stop next to the supermarket, but they honestly had no health section at all, I guess the pharmacy stuff is more for the pharmacy to sell here than supermarkets. After lunch we continued on our way to Kavala while having a challenge to see who could name the most songs and artists in a game of "Beat the Intro", Sabrina would play a song and stop it before the singing started, and in teams of two we had to work out what was what, Eloise and myself thought we were doing pretty good in the first round, however it appeared that Fabian and Sharie took that round out being 3 points ahead in that round. On the second round (final round) we Eloise and myself took that round out with 19 points, just enough to break even for first place against Fabian and Sharie... Tie breaker round... First person to put their hand up to name and song... We all started feeling the pressure coming on, The song comes on... And... None of us could name it, we all knew it, but couldn't think of the name, so next song ready... And... Half a second in... Hand up by Sharie, it was Sk8r Boi by Ariv Lavigne. Well done, well played. Onwards to Kavala, a seaport town that's been around for 2500 years. Upon arrival it was off to our rooms to quickly remove our dirty laundry and get it to the laundromat so they could wash our clothes for us, not cheap though at about NZ$20 for a small bag and double that for a large bag. It needed to be done and it is most likely going to be twice that in Turkey where we head tomorrow. By this stage I was feeling a bit worn out and my throat still sore, so I headed off to find a Pharmacy. That didn't take long as it appears there is at least two Pharmacies on each block of each street, and I'm not exaggerating on that at all. The problem I had though is that they were all closed. I had arrived in their nap time, essentially they work in he mornings until about 1:30ish, then they close for a few hours so they can go nap, then open again at about 4:30 for a few more hours... Very weird. So instead, I caught up with a few of the others and we made our way to the Kavala Castle. After finding the way to the castle (we took an unfortunate wrong turn) we started to climb the hill to the castle, narrow cobble stone streets at some points and while I'm feeling well I would have been fine, but as I'm not well I found myself breathing a bit too much by the time we got to the top. We took a look around at the over the rooftops of houses as well as looking over the Aegean Sea. We headed up a tower, with steps barely wide enough to fit up, I'm just glad they had installed modern day railing, however in order to get to the top we had to climb over in though a small passage way, this meant all of us had to make sure we watched our heads, it's a view that a lot of larger people will never see as the passage was very tight to fit up. We grabbed some more pics and then headed back down the hill, Fabian and I decided to head back while Damien, Lieu and Tim decided to take at Mohammad Ali's house along with a light house, apparently the house wasn't the house of the Mohammad Ali that we know, but some local person. The lighthouse wasn't even much more than a pillar with a light either apparently. I tried to go past a Pharmacy again to see if any were open, but still no. So it was back to the hotel to relax out of the sun for a little bit. While I was browsing Facebook A message from Ryan came up to say he had got our Laundry... That was quick as we only dropped it off about an hour and a half before and we were told it would be ready by 8:30pm, it was only about 5pm. But hey even better. Ryan started roll his clothes up like I do when I travel, however I noticed he folder his t-shirts one more time before rolling them than what I do, so I tried it out with two identical shirts (apart from colour) and it actually does save even more space, so now my t-shirts get one more fold, I'm struggling for space as it is. Shari, Ryan and I then made our way down the street to try and find some of the others at a bar, along the way I finally found a Pharmacy that was open so got some supplies and we proceeded to the bar, had a couple of drinks and then headed back to the hotel for dinner. Once dinner was over we made our way out again for a couple more drinks, I ended up feeling really sore throated so I headed back to the hotel to try sleep it off.
