Trivandrum, now known as Thiruvananthapuram ( although no one appears to be able to say this!) 15.3.10
Our last full day in India started early with a local train journey to Trivandrum. For the first time ever, we arrived at our destination early, which was a relief as the train was stuffed full of commuters (think London underground in rush hour in 45 degree heat with large backpacks!)
After a short wait in the blazing sun for a tuk-tuk, we dumped our bags at our hotel, ready to explore and spend our last rupees. We mooched around the relaxed and hassle free market and began to fill our shopping bags before heading off to the bazaar to continue the shopping spree.
That evening we chose to 'go local' for dinner and treated ourselves to a large masala dosa each with a selection of Bengali sweets for afters.
Two months have flown by. India is an amazing and unique country with friendly, curious people who are always willing to help and who show genuine pride in their country. The architecture never fails to inspire and delight from crumbling forts to dazzling castles and palaces with glittering interiors. We've seen mosques, Hindu, Sikh and Jain temples, Buddhist stupas, churches, cathedrals and even a synagogue. Religion is at the heart of this country with ceremonies and rituals occurring as part of everyday life for the people. There also seems to be great tolerance between different faiths living in close proximity to each other.
As an outsider aspects of India can seem harsh, unfair and downright cruel and it is hard not to wonder why more is not done to help the poorest and most vulnerable members of society. But most Indian people seem to accept their lot without complaint. Perhaps life will deal them an easier ride in their next incarnation? It can be hard to delve beyond the superficial in this complex, confusing, colourful and beguiling country.
We've had an amazing time, our bags are packed ready for the next adventure. It's sad to leave India but we both know we're not done with this country yet. We WILL be back..…however, after lugging our heavy bags on and off trains, tuk tuks and buses our packs will be smaller (but with just enough room for all the shopping and, of course, the number one travel accessory……gin!)
Next blog from KL; watch this space as J & N part company….travels are not over just yet!

Jean What a fantastic trip, Nik and you look great - tanned and healthy. Those of us left here are white and pasty and full of cold. Oh glorious England! But spring has sprung the last few days so you've missed the bad stuff. Hope you enjoy KL. My best mate Sarah lives there now if you need a contact. Hope to see you soon. We are in London in April.........Love JX
Lorraine You can come home now. The sun is shining. It sounds like you have had such a wonderful time. I am looking forward to hearing more. x
Kate Jo- Has anyone let you know that an extra infant has been added to the Moldovan wing of the family? :-) It was hard to think of anyone potentially more out of the loop than I am, but I suddenly realised that you're...well... wherever it is that you are....and that you may yet need informing. It's a girl! Ella. Changed from Clea. But that's another story.
Ros You look so relaxed and happy Nikki, it's obviously been a great trip. Look forward to hearing more when you are home. love Ros
