Panngarh Camp, near Bijaipur 25.1.10
We left the hotel at 6.30 to catch a local train (think bench seats, crowded with locals) to Bassi. The journey was around three hours and we were very grateful that we did not have 'tummy troubles' as did two very pale members of the group who looked frantically for toilet facilities at the station. The state of the toilets on the train made Jo cross her legs for the whole time and gave her a phobia about future train journeys.
We were collected by jeeps and driven through barren countryside until we reached a rough track down to the lake where the camp was situated. It was an 'Out of Africa' scenario…huge Rajasthani tents with carved beds and full toilet facilities (including hot and cold showers and plumbed in toilets…who knows where it all went!).
To celebrate the idyllic setting we tucked into a G&T's on our terrace just before lunch. We then spent the afternoon relaxing in warm sunshine and watching the local life around the lake. After sunset we sat round the open fire with more gin and tonics and finally fell asleep to the sound of the local wildlife which made a pleasant change from the horns and chanting of city life.
