Allahabad 23.2.10
Nikki
Another cross country 'main road' route took us to Allahabad, one of the four sites where the Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years. This year it's currently taking place at Haridwar; I had thought vaguely of going when I'm back in Delhi but have decided against mingling with the 60 million pilgrims who are said to attend!
Allahabad is a large bustling city and our hotel was situated on the main drag which made crossing roads the most challenging yet! Cows, tuk-tuks, motorbikes, push bikes, cycle rickshaws, buses, dogs and potholes are the main hazards apart from cars and this traffic was dense and fast!
We visited Nehru's house in the afternoon which was more interesting than I'd expected and then spent the rest of the day browsing in the nearby market and drinking beer back at the hotel. The newly acquired gin sits unused in the fridge as finding tonic water has been impossible ever since we left Delhi.
